"To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic year, have at least a 3.00 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's contests".

How does playing less than 50% of contests make a person less of an athlete/student? Do they not go to practice, perform volunteer duties the same as those that were fortunate to play?

You must have temporarily forgotten that these are the NCAA's regulations.

Prepster, now it all makes sense, no wonder the NCAA is held in such regard.
These guidelines are established by the WAC, so you'd have to ask them why they chose that criteria.

Most conferences have postseason academic teams, and athletes' must meet minimum competition/participation guidelines in order to receive the honor. Really no different than players who must have a minimum number of at bats to win the conference batting title or a minimum number of innings pitched to be recognized for lowest ERA.
