Got approached this past week buy a guy who said it was his company's business to match athletes with schools (D1, 2, etc.) based upon the kid's performance in a free evaluation performed by their scouts.  To move forward and join the service he wants around $1,500,  Are these companies for real, meaning do they provide a real service or is this some sort of scam?

Maybe we're spoiled in socal because there are scouts all around and they're having no hard time finding the HS players, so I can't imagine what these companies are used for.  Probably perfectly legit, but this was a new one for me. I'm supposed to follow up with the guy next week, but I doubt I'm calling back, I just don't see the value personally.

If you and your student are super busy and don't have time to get the details and relevant info (eg. reading this website) or just want to 'sub' out the work, then you can pay for someone else's time. As I help families find the academic fit for a living, I'm obviously biased about the 'value' of utilizing outside expertise.  That said, none of this college application 'stuff' is rocket science and you can (and should) read up on every aspect of the process.

There is nothing you can pay someone $1500 to do for your son that you and your son can't do on your own.  Even if you have to pay someone to shoot a video, you'll still be at least $1300 ahead if you do it on your own.  I had heard about companies like that when my son was younger, but fortunately for us I had a good friend whose son was 4 years older than mine who gave me a few tips.  It cost me about $50 in beer over the years as we ususally discussed it at a local watering hole, but other than that, not a dime....so I guess he saved me $1450    My son ended up playing at a D1 without any help.  Spend your $1500 on getting him on a good travel team or sending him to a couple top quality showcases in your area...you'll get as good, if not better results than you would paying someone else to "promote" him for you
