I dont think this is a yes or no.

Whether to attend a PG or other showcase or event has to do in my opinion with what purpose it serves.

We attended for a number of reasons even though he is a sophmore and was too young for any real scouting purposes.

First, he wanted to get the experience of a showcase/clinic tryout format.

Second, although he plays in games, he wanted the experience of trying to show off his abilities in front of a number of college coaches and in a large group to see whether and how he performs on the few hits or throws he got as opposed to the course of a seven inning game.

Third he wanted to see the level of competition beyond our local area. Frankly, we are assuming if he wants to go to school in the Northeast, the groups at these functions were the kids against whom he would be measured in large part.

Finally, he got good feedback and advice from a number of the coaches in attendance at both functions as far as not just technical ability but also on field hustle, dugout and off field personality, behavior in representing a team, etc.

As is normal in baseball, he did better at one event than the other as far as performance but it was not the relevant issue.

They gave him a lot of confidence in his abilties and recently was asked to join a well known travel team that plays the best possible ball to lead to a potential path to college ball. He loves the sport and it shows, but I doubt he would have performed so well to show his abilities in a "snapshot" and frankly relate in an upbeat and comfortable way with the coaches absent the TPX and PG functions.

Just my long winded opinion.
Eric - I can see you trying to figure things out and that is good. I am not sure this is a great topic however as it invites some to take pots shots regardless of your good intentions. There are literally thousands of PG posts here on the hsbbweb - pro and con. Do you suppose you could figure that out on your own? Also, perhaps send PG a pm as I am sure he would be glad to answer your questions.

PG is perhaps our top baseball expert/contributor to our site and our #1 financial backer. He never boasts about his organization or promotes himself. I don't want him to possibly have to defend himself here for yet another time. So far none of the posts are controversial but in that spirit, I am going to close the thread.

Thanks in advance for understanding. For those that disagree with this decision, please send me a pm so we can discuss offline. Thanks.
When we began the recruiting process with my son we were aware of the PG events but chose to attend a couple smaller events first. My thought process was to get my son comfortable with showcasing before we went to the main event. It really had little to do with the money at the time, I knew that the results of the PG event would be published and viewed by many, whereas smaller events do not get the same attention.

My son did the FSU camp for a couple years before High school and as a freshman, then we began the individualized events such as a regional Blue/Gray event and a Pro-Day event. Both were well run and a good experience for my son.

We felt as though we had laid the groundwork for attending a PG event and registered for the 2006 Underclassman event. My guy did not show very well, I was there and I watched... Eek as he booted a couple of balls at 3rd base during the evaluations, he hit okay and ran a slow 60 and was ranked a 7.5. Not the end of the world by any means but a wakeup call of sorts, or was it just a bad day?

Either way the rating was accurate and he just worked to improve so that he would not boot a ball again.

My guy went to the World Showcase in 2008 and had a great showing and was spoken to by the Yankees and invited to a MLB workout with them and also a MLB sponsored event in Atlanta attended by all 30 clubs, which resulted in an invite to an Orioles workout.

He also received several scholarship offers after that showcase where he improved his ranking to 9.

Our experience with PG events, the showcases and the WWBA and BCS series has been nothing short of the best experiences of my life with regard to the relationship that I developed and nurtured with my son. The folks at PG and in particular Jerry and his son, and the evaluators all combined to put on the best run baseball events we have ever attended. And these folks are very personable and all are very friendly and helpful.

The PG events are perfect for the player that aspires to play at the next level. I would not go to a PG Individual Showcase as the first event my son ever attended, rather build up to it and prepare. The PG events are going to provide a player with the most exposure that he can achieve at one event. Just make sure that your player is properly prepared, both physically and mentally to meet that challenge.

Do you think the cost of attending a PG Showcase is worth the money?
It depends on the budget you have to spend on gaining exposure. It depends on talent level. It depends what your son hopes to accomplish. It depends where you live relative to the cost of getting there, lodging and food. PG can be used for exposure. PG can be used to show your son there's a big bad world of competition outside his little world. Is PG necessary for getting to college ball? No, but it sure can help. Is it a positive experience for a kid capable of competing at that level? Absolutely.

Yes. My kid has done a few PG showcases, and it was good to see how he stacked up against other players in the region.

Obviously, not all players are in need of a PG rating to get recruited. But if you're a good ball player, it's certainly beneficial to attend one showcase by your junior year of high school.
