Just giving u a hard time, don't take it personally. This concept of elite level 7u travel teams gets me going. Imo this is where some of the "crazy parents" get their start. They think their 7 yr old is so much better than others his age they need to get him on travel team and pay hundreds with several uniforms w matching bags.

My son played LL for $50-$80, got  colored t-shirt jersey and had amazing times until he was 13 and we realized passion for baseball wasn't a phase he would grow out of. He learned the basics, and played various positions. I've seen 9-10 yr olds play only one position at that age and never get to see if they have other talents. My son was ss, P, catcher, and now plays OF in HS and Loves it. He's so looking forward to playing in college next yr.

His  travel ball experiences were mostly positive, just don't get using word elite/select or anything similar when discussing 7 yr olds.

good luck with your program .

When my son joined a 12U travel team for his first travel experience I saw a player that was elite from 8U-11U but suddenly became not so elite at 12U and then at 13U was better suited to play rec ball.  On the other end of the spectrum my son played rec ball in a small town until 12U where he evolved to be a starter on a Major level travel team.

I think 7U ball would be good as long as it is used to educate kids in how to play the game but in a low pressured environment.  I'm just not sure how often this would be the case.

Thanks for all the input guys.  I myself played select baseball since I was 9 years old with a program called the Dallas Tigers under Tommy Hernandez.  I contribute this greatly to what helped my baseball career. I was prepared for everything in baseball and this led me to playing at the University of Texas as well in the Los Angeles Angels Farm system.  I contribute this to playing select and actually playing in HIGH PRESSURE environments. Now this isn't the same for every kid that plays select.

HOWEVER, all three of my brothers played with the Dallas Tigers, starting select when they were 8 or 9 and led to all 4 of us getting baseball college scholarships and free educations.

I respect all of your opinions but for my family, select baseball was much more beneficial then any little league.  In little league you don't learn leads, steals, etc until after the age of 12.  I feel the level of play in most little leagues and the lack of coaching experience by most actually hurts those players that want to play high school ball and beyond.

This is just my humbled opinion after living it and going on to play Professional Baseball.  Yes 7u is very young and I agree with starting select at that age.  However when good kids come up to you that want to play in the organization, I will not turn them down to learning this great game of Baseball

Go Horns!

Respectfully, Jonathan Walsh
