Batter squares to hunt and pulls back on a pitch above his head. Ump calls strike and coach asks for an appeal. Plate Ump refuses and says he called it a strike because he stepped on the plate. Is it an automatic strike if you step on the plate but no contact?

Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude. Thomas Jefferson

arghhhhh.............no, not ever.....

these are the things that you hear about as a trainer of umpires that not only make you cringe, but wonder where on earth this comes from....

disheartening to say the least.....
LOL thanks guys and sorry for bringing down your night with this one.

I guess I didn't explain the appeal very well. We know you can't appeal a strike call but he didn't say anything about the strike being on an attempt. He just said strike one and we came out to initially ask if it was in the zone or on an attempt. When he said on the attempt we were floored by it because the ball was nowhere near the zone and the bat was pulled back. I realize you only have my word for this but I'm hoping I've got enough credibility with you guys that you know I'm not blowing smoke.

After we heard he said he offfered on the pitch we sarcastically asked he needed to ask for help on that one. I guess he took us serious and said he didn't have to ask for help because that's not in the rules. Then we countered with it's a courtesy for an umpire to at least ask. This is when he came back at us with he stepped on the plate so it's an automatic strike. This floored us because we were 99% sure he was wrong.

Also, I'm pretty sure the hitter never stepped foot on the plate. Maybe he did but I would put money down that he didn't. Oh well, it is what it is.

Thanks for the answer.
