Was hoping to get some thoughts and feedback from the board-

What are the chances that Schools that aren't necessarily the High Academic type would be in attendance for the Sr. Academic Game try-outs? Maybe some less than HA schools (D1's D2's etc.) that want or are looking for good students would show up? Looking for the 'outlier' that hasn't committed yet that even though has good grades & scores isn't necessarily looking for the rigorous type school work?

Just wondering if it's worth the $150 in the hopes that a good D2 (out west) might be looking for a solid SS w/ a good bat (kid should have a decent shot of being selected for the game)?

Really no current interest in Expensive HA D3's at this point.

Thoughts?

Opinions?

DD,

I would imagine that any school with common sense will have a guy checking out that tryout. What do they have to lose. Many schools offer academic "merit scholarships" at GPAs from 3.0+ with commensurate test scores. I am betting that there are going to be other schools watching those tryouts. Your boy is a 2018, what's another $150 toward the effort at this point, right?

Exactly what I was looking for....Conformation to throw another hundo+ into the 'process'!

Thanks SDR, I knew I could count on your logic! lol

Not sure about which "other" colleges scout the tryout, but when my guy went there were a LOT of guys with clipboards there.  Just a hunch that there's a very broad representation of schools.  You could improve the odds if the schools your kid is interested in can explain that he'll be trying out.  Kids are on 'stage" all by themselves, even if it's only briefly.

Agree with the prior posts.  There were tons of coaches scouting the tryouts and the actual academic game.  Some of the schools that reached out to my 2017 were not known as academic but really pushed the merit aid angle with him.  Two of them told him with his test scores he could get close to a full ride on merit money at their schools.  That wasn't happening at the HA schools.

That said, be sure your son actually meets the academic criteria required to be able to tryout.  And even then it is not automatic that he will be granted a tryout (if not, they refund your deposit).  My son only met two of the three criteria and was not offered a tryout at his primary position but was invited to tryout at his secondary position of pitcher.  Fortunately he did well enough at the tryout to be selected for the game, did well in his inning on the mound, and had lots of follow-up from coaches after the game.  Best $150 we ever spent!

AZ Fall Classic / Academic All-Star game try-out one of the most underrated events on the west coast. And the try-outs and game are STACKED w/ schools. One of the best recruiting events my son did.

If your son is a good student and wants to play in college...It's a no brainer

Senior academic game or junior academic game? Or both?

Agree with Smokeminside that you should do both, as there was no better showcase event that we experienced.  And yes, the Ivies are still recruiting at the Senior Academic game.  Columbia followed up and watched my 2017 pitch later in the weekend.  My bank account sighed a huge sound of relief when they did not follow-up after his game performance, as I ran the numbers and it would have been $64K a year to go there had they wanted him.  No way that was going to happen!

At the HF Camp the past November D3's and few Ivy's were still looking for players.  I was surprised with the Ivy's ... they must have had late fall out with a few offers (??)  This was three weeks after the AZ Fall Junior Classic.  So if a kid is not recruited yet, it's worth it.  One of the best run events "we" experienced.
