2014 received cold email from D3 coach in the fall guaging interest and requesting a fall playing schedule, Later learned that college coach had some phone contact with travel coach and did come to a tournament. Not clear as to whether he actually was at one of son's games, but do know he was in attendance at the tournament.

Checked into the school and filled out an online scholarship calculator. Son has since been regularly maied, emailed and called by admissions. Assume it was from the scholarship calculator which asked for contact information. But zero contact from the coach. Had basically forgotten about the school from a baseball standpoint and tossed all the college admissions mail into the trash.

Out of the blue the coach emails asking if son still has interest, and if so, to send a spring playing schedule and updated video links. Seems odd to have no contact for 4-5 months and then hear back at this late date. Anyone experienced anything like this?

Yes.   Absolutely.  Mostly with D3s but we experienced it with D1s too.  It has been said & suggested many times on this site that the players recruiting schedule is not necessarily the college coaches recruiting schedule.  We learned by trial and error who is in the market , and when they are in the market for recruits.   Good luck!

Stafford,

It sounds to me like the Coach and Admissions are running separate recruiting campaigns or don't have an athletic liason between the two depts.   You're doing the right thing by keeping the communication going as best you can with Admissions and the Coach.  As for the time lag between their last contact, there could be thousands of reasons.  If your son is genuinely interested, now is a great time to visit schools and see some games if you can tolerate the cold.   My youngest son and I went to a D3 game yesterday that was about 42 degree and went into extra innings....just our luck! ;-)   He got to see two teams he is interested in, and he now has an excuse to send the coaches a follow up email.

Hard to say if my son is genuinely interested because we really don't know much about the school. This is a school neither of us has ever seen. It just came into the equation because of baseball. If the contact had continued in the fall, he would have already made a visit to see campus. But since he never heard back, it sort of was forgotten as a possible choice.

We would definitely go for a visit, if he knows that the coach is really interested. At this point, we're not going to make the 3 1/2 hour drive unless he's sure they have a genuine interest.

If we can determine that they are, then they have a series toward the end of next month against another D3 that he has visited and is seriously considering. That would be the best scenario for a visit.

Exactly.  The one thing I don't see in Stafford's posts is anything indicating that the player ever said, "Yes, I'm interested."

I don't know how much attention anyone has a right to expect if the coach reaches out and you don't reach back.

Sounds like your son is fortunate the coach is still interested.  Since son is apparently uncommitted entering his senior season, I should think son might want to get motivated to jump on this.  And, the more he does in the next 12 days, the less he'll have hanging over his head as he tries to focus on just playing the game in the spring season.

O.K. just to be clear, the email said something along the lines of, "Sorry we haven't been in contact lately, but, If you're still interested send your schedule, etc..."

Son responded back that day that yes he was still interested and sent the schedule and video link. So, yes, there is interest.

If there is more correspondence going forward, he will likely make a visit, complete the admissions info, etc... So, far, he has responded to what the coach requested.

Stafford,

It's getting late.  Your son needs to decide if this school interests him, or not.  Even non-baseball players have made their college choices by now, subject only to the letters they're hoping to get in about 7 weeks.

If he's interested, he needs to initiate contact, not just react.  If he wants it, it's time to reach out and grab it.

I agree it is late. However, he has been accepted by three other schools he is currently considering. In fact, he's been accepted at several schools. It never hurts to complete a free online application at a school of interest.

Also, he has been accepted at a public institution if he decides to not play sports.

The school that is the subject of this post has also granted him acceptance based on self-reported information. Their admissions office is very creative. They've called and offered scholarship money and have mailed, and emailed for months. They also have successful graduates write personal letters that are mailed to prospective students.

I think the deadline from his standpoint will be May 1. That's when the public university will want their enrollment deposit to hold his spot.
