In a tense close tight game the other day in our city little league, the two base coaches asked for time right in the middle of a 1-2 counts with one out. The umpire granted time and the two base coaches walked towards each other and met inbetween the mound and third base and had a conference between themselves but nobody else. It was brief- about 10 seconds. Then the base coaches went back to their respective coach boxes at first and third and play resumed. The question I have is this-

Is it legal for a coach to call for time like this and have a conference with the other coach and not with a player also? I thought base coaches could only get time granted if they are having a conference with a injured player, a batter, baserunner. They cant actually get time just to talk over signs with each other can they? To me it would seem like an intimidation move or to take the pitcher out of his rythm.

Under NFHS rules the offense is allowed one charged conference per inning.......If it is the first conference I would allow it. I dont know of any NFHS reference that states who the conference must be with........Maybe MST has one...

My only thoughts on this would be to fall back on the NCAA rule which does state:

"A Conference is charged each time a coach delays the game or requests time to talk to offensive personnel, whether hitter, runer, on deck batter or another coach"

So in my estimation, I'd allow it...
