I'm listening to my favorite band, Dropkick Murphys, and got to thinking about baseball and bands.

The Murphys are from Boston and are big Boston sports fans, especially the Red Sox.

I have a Bronson Arroyo CD where he did some cover songs...not too bad.

I also hear that Peter Gammons is quite a musician.

I have a friend whose son had a band called Southpaw but I'm not sure they had anything to do with baseball.

Any other bands out there who have a special love for this great game?

There is a musician here in Seattle name Scott McCaughey, who used to play in the Young Fresh Fellows in the 1980s and was more recently a secondary and touring member of R.E.M., who had a side gig that did two albums called "The Baseball Project" that he did with R.E.M.'s Peter Buck among others. It's a hoot. The songs are called things like like “Past Time,” “Ted F*cking Williams,” “1976,” “Satchel Paige,” and “Don’t Call Them Twinkies.” There are two volumes - the first one is "Frozen Ropes and Dying Quails" and the second is "High and Inside."

I had no idea they were big into baseball. My son played a few of their songs for me one day, and we were cracking up at some of the lyrics. They seem like a hard edge Irish themed band and we enjoyed most of their songs.

Gaelic Storm has some interesting tunes, though they are not as hard edged.

Off Kilter has a similar type of sound as the Dropkick Murphys, but again not as hard edged.

Neither are baseball related, but if you like one you probably will enjoy them all.

Last verse from Tessie:

Tessie, "Nuf Ced" McGreevey shouted
We're not here to mess around
Boston, you know we love you madly
Hear the crowd roar to your sound
Don't blame us if we ever doubt you
You know we couldn't live without you
Tessie, you are the only only only
Don't blame us if we ever doubt you
You know we couldn't live without you
Boston, you are the only only only
Don't blame us if we ever doubt you
You know we couldn't live without you
Red Sox, you are the only only only

Last September, they set up a stage over the Fenway bullpens and played to the fans in the RF bleachers. My goal someday is to see a Red Sox day game at Fenway then a Dropkick Murphys show at the Hard Rock across the street.

My son's walk up song this spring will be "Shipping Up To Boston."
