Point well taken...we also do this for the love of the game and the wonderful family experience. As this is an anonymous forum (to some degree), I was curious as to whether we "are over the top" -- I wouldn't feel comfortable asking my friends and other parents on the team...
To second your point - anytime you provide an opportunity for your child to be involved, work towards a goal, be part of a team, fail in a safe environment and learn how to handle that failure and make adjustments - IMO you are giving him the foundation for growing up to be a well-rounded, level-headed adult who will have the coping mechanisms to deal with just about any "curve" that's every thrown his way.
