Holding the bat out in front is done with one hand held at the knob of the bat. This will determine if a hitter can control his bat according to weight. The hitter should be able to hold the bat in front without the barrel of the bat wavering. If it wavers, the bat is to heavy. Usually the bat should be about waist high when the barrel of the bat is on the ground and the knob is aproximatly waist high. If the hitter cannot control the bat when held out in front, he needs to go lighter and possibly a shorter bat to stay with the negative three offset for high school rules. If a hitter cannot control the bat the hitter can not control his swing.

Hope this helps,
