My son has always been a tad on the small size. Not so much in height but in weight and strength. Add to this I started him in school early and most everyone was older, bigger and stronger. Bat speed has always been an issue.

Fast forward to his soph year. Made Varsity and used a 32/29 Exo. Did fine. He has been working out and is now 6' 1" and is up to 155 lbs. As a senior he could be 1 more inch and 20 lbs heavier.

Looking for a new BBCOR bat this weekend and he swung a 33/30. He said it felt fine. Different. Could feel the length of the new size in getting to the ball.

A few people have told me that at 6' 1" he should be swinging the bigger bat. I could get him both sizes for next year but I feel that he could be ready for bigger.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

It's about bat speed and control for my kid. He is 5'10 150. He can swing a 33/30 but I will only let him do that if he is facing a slower pitcher. Facing good, quality varsity pitching he swings the 32/29. It's what he is confortbale with and can swing fast. If he can cover the plate well with a 32 then there is no real need to go to a bigger bat, bigger is not always better IMO
Take the bat, place the knob at the center of your chest, the extend your arm straight our to the end of the bat. This is the best size for length.

Weight is different, swing a heavy bat to practice to develop hands and wrists. Mike Diaz Pirates outfielder had several bats. a 30 ounce for Dwight Gooden and 34 ounce for others.

Most pro players lower the weight as the season progress.
Use the batters box to adjust - "up or back"; "off" for a longer look!

Most HS players swing a 33" bat. Bat control is key. If a hitter feels like he has to start his swing early against a hard thrower, he has too much bat. If a hitter feels like he can't stop a swing as well as he should, too much bat. That being said, the bigger bat will provide more mass and more plate coverage and sometimes a slightly bigger sweetspot. A different mold is used for each different size and generally, everything is proportionately stretched with a longer bat. If you feel like he is between sizes, remember he can always choke up on the bigger bat against hard throwers.
