It's difficult for people who have never seen your son swing at bat to provide bat advice. When my son entered middle school he was required to use a -3 bat. So he did the same for travel. At thirteen a kid is typically in 7th grade. This means he's two years removed from high school ball. The lightest bat I would have him swing is a -5 and absolutely move to a -3 next year. The length and weight should the largest he can swing in a mechanically sound manner.
