My son is a freshman playing JV using a -3 bat for the first time. He practiced all winter to get use to the heavier bat and is having a great year. The problem is his summer PONY league started this weekend and the mound is 5 feet closer than it is in high school. He used his -3 for PONY but seemed to be a little late with his swing as well as not getting on top of the fastball as he usually does. He is allowed to use a lighter bat in PONY

The questions I have are.

1. Is it just a timing issue he needs to get use to?
2. Should he swing a lighter bat when he plays PONY?
3. Would swinging a lighter bat in PONY mess him up swinging the -3 in high school?

Sorry for the long winded question.

Ditto on the -3 advice you've already received. ...may not help his stats much this spring/summer in the PONY league, but should provide long-term positive results.

The key is keeping after it. Tell him not to get down. He's in a transitional period with his game. ...a time when many boys drift away or throw in the towel. Encourage him to stay focused on his goal, and use the summer to work on all aspects of his game, not the least of which is weight training. The off-season gym work will help him get that -3 around.
I'm not directly addressing the bat issue (but I agree with what's been said here by others), but I'm surprised that a HS freshman is still involved in Pony league and not in the full size diamond. Practically every place here in NE starts the full-size diamond at 13 y/o. I wouldn't bother with Pony baseball at this point, that's really a sort of developmental thing for younger players, in fact AAU players play on that Pony size diamond at ages 11 and 12.

I think you'd eliminate your bat issue entirely by playing in a league that adheres to the same size field as he's playing in HS, particularly since he is playing JV, bypassing freshman baseball. Why go backwards? Seems like a waste of time. Good luck however you do it.
