First of all I read this thread and didnt want to respond to it....

couple of reasons........one, In 20+ years, I have NEVER been hit by a batted ball... I have come mighty close a few times, but have managed to avoid it each time.....

Being a bit superstitious (what baseball person isnt) I was afraid that if I said the above that I was jinxing myself and some 15 yr old with his new xp-51 rocket launcher bat would drill me right off the next time I took the bases.......

Last night was my first stint on the bases.......NO, I didnt get drilled, but yes it was on my mind.......which leads me to my second thought.....

The original poster said the opposing team was unhappy the first time and livid the second time....I think the chances of an umpire being struck by a batted ball twice in one game to be somewhat odd/improbable yet it happended......but possibly this umpires mobility or focus or training was limited ....again, it happened...

YET, it is only by the grace of god that more umpires and of course more players are not struck by batted balls that come off of these hot bats at ungodly speeds.....at least players have a glove and a legal right to protect themselves.....Umpires can only try to avoid the interferece or take the lump when hit..........

ANY manager who comes out to discuss an Umpire interference call with me better be coming to ask if my partner is physically OK..........any beef about him getting hit will not be met with any sympathy......
