Howdy:

The ball was hit, landing foul (about 10 feet from home plate), then rolled back across the foul line into the infield. The pitcher walked over pick up the ball and walked back to the mound. The batter had taken 2 steps toward first, stopped, turned around, picked up the bat and returned to the batter's box. The pitcher then resumed pitching.

The "just stand there" advice is interesting. This past weekend in a 12U tournament on a play at the plate the runner slid in, the catcher swept the tag.

Everyone waited for the call, the umpire just stood there.

Catcher's coaches yelled, "show him the ball!". Catcher showed the ball in the glove. Still, the umpire just stood there.

Runner shifted leg slightly to touch the plate. Umpire yells "SAFE."

The runner hadn't previously reached the plate and the catcher had missed the tag. The umpire was just waiting for someone to do something.

Good job there. No tag, no touch, no call.
I had a similar thing happen one day in a JV game. Inside pitch, up, the batter ducked but didn't take his bat with him. It hit the bat and went to the pitcher. He picked it up and stood there, the batter stood in the box. I stood on the line pointing fair, never said a word. Finally the third base coach got the hint and yelled run. The runner took off, the pitcher came alive and threw him out. Kind of comical really.
