R1 and R2, < two outs. Runners break on a passed ball in the dirt to the 3rd Base side, catcher picks it out of the dirt and while throwing to 3b, hand and ball contact batter's helmet who is good 3-5 feet out of the batters box backing away from the plate (still moving) watching the runner going to third. Ball careens off the helmet and into the stands.
My ruling "interfence, runner out at third and R1 returned to first"

6.06c isn't valid in this case. It is only in effect for balls the the catcher catches or is imediately reachable. Once it gets away and F2 has to chase it, 7.11 comes into effect. The batter must clear whatever space he needs to field the ball. To interfere with the throw it has to be intentional and here it is not. I would have nothing except base awards. Now if you feel the batter moved to a spot to get in the way then bang the out.
JJK,

You probably didnt get any flak for your decision at the time.......but as MST has quoted 6.06 is not applicable....

In visualizing your post, if its clear that you saw some intentional movement to interfere, then you got the right result even if it was somewhat muddied....

hang in there.......keep calling, and keep reading the book......let me know what we can do to help you.......
