What's the correct call in this situation? Runners on first and second are stealing and the right handed batter jumps back to avoid getting hit by an inside pitch. The catcher jumps for the wild inside pitch, catches it and collides with the batter who is still falling backwards out of the batters box trying to regain his balance. The runner already had third stolen but since the catcher and hitter came into contact the umpire called the runner out at third due to batter's interference. Is this the correct call and,if so, why?

map,
I can't say for sure if the Ump should have called interference on the batter given the scenario you described. (HTBT) It might just be incidental contact between the batter and catcher given the location of the pitch and what each was trying to do at the time. However, if the Ump did in fact determine that the batter intentionally interfered with the catcher he should call the batter out (not the runner) and send the runners back to second and first base respectively.

probably a good deal of HTBT in here, but from your post, I am probably leaning toward nothing.....if the pitch was so inside that the batter had to bail and the catcher had to leap inside to catch it, Im leaning toward a train wreck.....

The rule of thumb I use is to try and determine what were the players doing. Were they where they were supposed to be....and doing what they were supposed to be doing......

We have a batter avoiding a pitch and a catcher trying to catch a wild pitch........seems to be reasonable things to me.....Like Pilsner, I see this as most likely incidental contact........
