I thought we had this one recently but I couldn't find it. Tight game, R1 & R3, 3-0 count. Pitch is a good 6" inside to hitter and botched by the catcher. Umpire gives a much delayed strike one. Batter waits, then runs to first. Ball bounces in front of the plate where batter kicks it up the first base line. I have pretty good view and I don't think he kicked it so much as it hit his foot while he is running.

Tying run scores, all heck breaks out.

Umpires rule, "play on". I think they got it right. No interference, the ball just hit the batter who shouldn't be running, but I can't blame him based on the late strike call.

Probably 500 people in attendance and probably only three of us (two blues & I) think its the right call. The ball/strike was late and wrong, batter takes off after a delay, ball bounces funny and hits his foot. Pretty much a disaster play.

Worse yet, another of our parents blasted HP in the parking lot. I'm parked right next to HP and walk up a few minutes later and tell him I think he got it right and not to worry about it. First time I ever addressed an umpire in the parking lot, but he looked upset and I thought he'd done the right thing. His partner jumped out thinking I was another rogue, we all had a nice chat and I think everyone felt better.

I will discuss the situation with the other parent, but wanted to make sure I had it right first.

It sounds right to me. Batter did nothing intentional. F2 needs to learn to catch it. Doesn't matter if he ran or was standing there and it ricocheted off of him.

I have nothing and play on.

It sounds like the other parent needs to learn what umpiring is about. But, what do parents need to know? They just know Lil' Johnny lost his chance to the pros b/c of that 1 call.
