Got a rules question for you...probably a HTBT but I'll try to describe it best I can.

Dropped 3rd strike, batter/runner breaks for first. Actually, the ball got through the catcher pretty hard and is bouncing around as the catcher is chasing it. After running in circles he finally picks it up behind the RH batters box.

While he's dancing with the wild pitch, the runner it trucking down the line. It's going to be a close play.

Here's the confusing part...while the ball's rolling around, the first baseman has taken position in foul ground trying to give the catcher an angle. F3 has his right foot against the outside edge of the bag and his left foot is 2-3 feet into foul ground. This is normally the runner's lane of course. With 4-5 steps to go, the runner adjusts his line of direction, moving across the chalk line, just into fair territory anticipating that he'll have to be on the inner half of the bag to avoid contact.

Unfortunately for the runner, the throw is right over his head. The firstbaseman lunges to the inner half of the bag right in the B/R's direction. B/R hits the bag and then the first baseman. First baseman doesn't catch the ball.

B/R is called out by PU (one-man in case you're wondering) for running outside his lane (in fair territory).

Thoughts?

I would disagree Dash. The OP said the F3 came back accross the bag and got hit by the runner. It sounds like obstruction to me. I will give you it is a HTBT. If it's an OBR game then you may still have obstruction. The ball was high enough it went over the F3's head, so I assume that it went to RF. If this is true then F3 may have prevented the BR from trying for second. This is most definitely a HTBT.
Commonly called a "train wreck" that typically happens at first with no clear individual responsible for the contact and/or subject to much interpitation.

What I would expect is that if the ball got there first and the 1st basemen holds on - he is out. If he drops the ball the runner is safe. Normally obstruction and interference is not called at 1st base in my experience
Even trying to explain this the best I can, it's obviously a HTBT.

For argument's sake, if the collision happens before the ball arrives, I would have assumed that to be obstruction.

In this case it's hard to reconstruct the events. In my mind's eye, I see the collision at the base, and the ball arriving at the same time basically. Ball did not hit the runner. Firstbaseman got a glove on it but the force of the collision didn't allow him to get a clean catch. Ball dropped to the ground just past 1B.

Don't know if it matters now but this was a 12u USSSA game which I believe is OBR.

Thanks.
