It is pretty personal. Some great hitters believe in doing everything the same way. Some great hitters believe in using the box to their advantage. It was made 6 feet long for a reason.
If a guy throws absolute gas, whats wrong with making him throw it 63 feet instead of 59. That may help some hitters with read and reaction time. With a guy like Wakefield, I would think some would be on the front line, but as I think, its very personal.
I think it depends on the strengths and weaknesses of the batter and also the situation they are in. Hitter who have trouble hitting pitches on the outer 3rd of the plate may want to inch up to the plate a little. Also, if you want to bunt (squeeze or sac), you can move up in the box to give you a better ball angle for being fair. Also you may want to move up in the box if a pitcher throws a good curve ball or slider in order to see the ball and hit it at a higher point instead of letting it drop in the zone and hit it.
