Any reason to tell a kid to let every pitch get deep and and tell him to get jammed in BP before a game? Coach had my son do that and, surprise, he hasd three at bats and was jammed three times. Any idea what he was trying to get to work on?

Son is a power hitter.

To demonstrate more clearly that he is incompetent?

Just as a note my son used to hear this when he was in HS, “let the ball get deeper…bla bla bla”. When he gets to college it is “you are letting the ball get too deep and getting jammed and losing your power, hit the ball in the power zone out in front more”

They do spend a lot of time hitting to the opposite field, but they work on hitting the ball where they have the most leverage.
Of course the opposing coach and his pitcher was watching BP. Your son and his coach sent a message. "Pitch inside"!!!

A "smart" hitter would make adjustment after the first inside pitch.

Henry Aaron and Willie Mays would swing at a "bad" pitch on purpose so the pitcher would throw it again and Henry would hit it "off the fence".

Good hitters are like a "fox".

doughnutman,

It would be interesting to know what the coach was thinking. Seems like the BP pitcher, not the hitter, would control jamming the hitter. Depending on the relationship with the coach, I would have your son ask him what is it they are trying to accomplish. I used to love it when our players would ask legimate questions. Most coaches would and should have a legitimate answer.

Typically (pre-game) BP is exactly that... Batting Practice! Hitters want to get their timing down and get in a good groove. Seems like jamming yourself in BP would be counter-productive.

My best guess, and it is just a guess, is your son being a power hitter has been taking some pitches on the inner half of the plate and the coach wanted your son to practice attacking and driving that pitch. Then again maybe he has a different reason.

I've never heard of using BP to confuse the other team. If you want to confuse the other team, don't take BP. That is better than showing and practicing an approach you don't want to use in the game.
Doesn't make any sense to me. There's a difference between situational hitting and what you've described. No matter what you are working on in batting practice (situationally speaking), in my opinion, the objective should be to hit the ball hard every single pitch you swing at. If that's what your goal is in a game, why do anything different in BP?

Sounds as if coach trying to make a valid point withouth clearly communicating what he was trying to accomplish. In pre-game bp like to see it structured where we are working on specific things that transfer to game play. For example, never just swinging to get in x number of cuts. Like structure in pre game bp. For example start out with 2 hit and run. Then working opposite field, to middle, then an inner half round. Finishing up with a couple of "read" rounds where we are taking our game approach into the box, trying to drive all pitches through the middle and simply reading ball and adjusting. Hope this helps.

This is a clear example of a father blaming the coach for a player's performance. If a coach says anything and the boy does poorly then daddy (and/or the son) will blame it on what the coach said or did beforehand. Not like the hitter hasn't heard let the ball get deep 1,000 times already. I agree the phrase is over used and not always appropriate. But take some responsibility.
