I like the sounds of the first one, but does 3-5 feet sound long?
I would agree. One to three feet is probably more realistic.
What about far enough where he can reach it as his foot hits the bag?

For younger guys - pre high school - I think you are right. For high school and especially above, the more you can get on that side of the bag the better. You get it sooner and avoid the runner. As long as it is not too obvious, the umpire will allow him to "cheat" a little for his safety.
I'll try it with The Kid next week and feed you back. Thanks for sharing the ideas.
