I guess it is never to early to talk about the battlefield. I am sitting in my office today thinking about the teams and just wanted to know if there was any thoughts.

The real question in my mind is who will challenge for the title. I do believe every team i do believe except for Caroline replaces their SS, is that not true?

Courtland last years co-regular season champions(still doen't have a coach from what i know of), lost like 10 or 11 seniors and almost all impact players, so will they have anything in the cubbard come time for the season? Transfers maybe?

Chancellor last years co-regular season district champions, but(new coach)a couple key players still remain with morgan, selbe, greer and C. barlow. should be fairly strong but still unanswered questions all over the field especially with new coach, bringing in new philosophy and new ideas.

King Goerge key players returning with estes, carroll to anchor pitching, but how strong will they be up the middle? Coach has had them headed in the right direction but can they get over the hump.

Eastern View last years district tournament champions and have been in district championship game since entering the district with two titles. lost 8 or 9 seniors replacing every starter but the 3b Pittman, who this fall was catching, return starting pitcher May should be strong, they always put competitive teams on the field.

spotsylvania will this be the year coach davenport can get them into the mix had some key losses but also have a good bit returning, i should know more on this team but feel i don't.

Jayem can they get the players out to play baseball is the question definitly the weakest, but if the kids cared as much about baseball as they did about football i wonder if things would change there.

Caroline have lost only 1 or 2 players from last years team that went to the district tournament championship game. With Pico, Beasley and Shifflet on the mound strong pitching is a definite and bats being led by beasley and smith. They have nice sticks but now the group is older will they take the title or.....

Culpeper only lost 1 or 2 players off of last years young squad, they have some talent but can they put it all together. They have some solid bats and a new transfer who has some ability to take over at ss and see time on the mound culpeper could be in the mix.

Not sure of how many players have signed in the district this year, not even sure who could be players of the year in the district. Not even sure who the best players are at each position.

What do you guys know about this years teams?

Good question. Yes, KG has Carroll and Estes returning to the hill. Dustin Phillips is a capable reliever as well. Got some big holes to fill in the infield at SS, 2B and 1B. 3B is solid with D.Dombrowskas (2010 1st Team All District) and there are some quality players coming up from JV - M. Hunt (SS), Cody Bell (2B), Z. Kegsley (1B). Truslow returns at catcher. Outfield has D. Hunt returning. Carroll will return as an OF (when not on the mound) as will L. Estes. J. Estes (outstanding JV player) will augment the OF as well. There's a few I'm missing or haven't thought of but that's basically it.

Can they put it together? There's a reasonable chance they can. It's not the same but all of them except the Estes' are playing in the RFBL (Rappahannock Fall Baseball League) this fall. Finished the season 8-6 and won the first playoff game today - 9-2 over Northumberland.

With Courtland, Chancellor and EV in rebuilding mode after losing many seniors to graduation along with new coaches for Courtland and Chancellor, Spotsylvania and Culpeper questionable and JM....(the fact JM even fields a team is a wonder), I believe the Battlefield is Caroline's or King George's for the taking. I give Caroline the slight edge in pitching over KG.

Now FWIW, Chancellor has not faired well in the RFBL (0-14), EV finished 5-9, Culpeper 4-10. Caroline went 8-5-1 and as mentioned KG 8-6. Only problem with this is how many BB players were playing football. Enough to make the difference? I have no clue.

It might vary some but I rank the schools as follows:

Caroline
King George
Eastern View
Culpeper
Spotsylvania
Courtland
Chancellor
James Monroe

But I feel positions 3-7 could easily be jumbled. Like you I don't have a good feel for what some teams have coming up through the ranks or via transfer. As always, time will tell.

what are your opinions ? is he qualified? you said the players like him, sorry just looking for info. was he the younger guy?[/QUOTE

He has alot of experience. He played in the minors
as a catcher. His son graduated in 2005 from coutland and will be helping him also. Courtland did lose alot of players due to graduation, but they have some strong young ones coming up. Several played legion ball and did very well.
that sounds good for courtland, i hope the kids respond well to him. forgot about dombrowskas at KG, he was a solid player. I watched some of the J.V games last year if the Kegsley kid is the big lefty then he will do fine for them, looked like he swing a solid stick.

I wonder if Greer will take over the SS for chancellor or if it will be the morgan kid. I am not sure if fall ball will carry a whole lot of weight as there was a good chunk of fall ball teams that were missing varsity players and most will do things in the fall that they won't do in the spring so not sure, but it is what we have so far.

That was probably Corey Henderson. Kegsley is a righty and played 3B on JV. Corey's got a good bat and can pitch though I don't see him as a starting pitcher. Probably in relief. Otherwise I see him at 1B.

As far as fall ball, I take it with a grain of salt since some are playing football or whatever. But it does give you a rough idea (very rough) of what's out there. It is what it is.

Can't believe you forgot the only KG player named to the 1st team all district........(hint - 3rd base).

Otherwise, I pretty much agree with your preseason predictions. Caroline's pitching will be tough.
Is this the year of the pitchers in the battlefield or will it still be a hitter dominated district.
KG Estes and Carroll
Caroline Beasley and Pico
Chancellor Morgan and Barlow
EV May and Pittman
Spotsy King and Ewing
Culpeper Lafin and Gorby
Courtland Zaluzney and neal

As far as culpeper goes, they return all but their CF from last years team. They have added a key player a transfer from liberty named gorby a SS/P. Lafin is now being looked at by some schools at OF/P, they have the big firstbaseman peavley returning. They will be much improved.
I think this will be the year of the pitchers due to players now having to use the BBCOR bats. Plus the district lost a lot of big time hitters:

Travis Frum - Chancellor
Josh Gardiner - Eastern View
Jonathan Haught - Courtland
Mike Oster - Chancellor
Clay Keranen - Courtland
Steven Barlow - Chancellor
Lee Rossi - Eastern View
R.W. Payne - Spotsy
B.J. Collins - Spotsy
Theo Klopsis - King George

Any scrimmages going on this week?

I'm apt to lean towards it being a pitching dominated year as well, but anything can (and often does) happen.

Scrimmages - King George is at Massaponnax Friday night 6 pm. Not sure about anyone else.
I also think pitchers will have their fair share of success, there are a couple of top notch bats that i know of that are left, i really like talley-ewing from spotsy, beasley-smith from caroline, pittman-settle from EV, neal of courtland, selbe-greer of chancellor, lafin-gorby-peavley from culpeper, Dombraskas-carroll KG. So you never know.

Culpeper vs Madison this weekend. Next week Culpeper vs Rapp., EV vs Kettle Run, EV vs osbourn park. Spostsy vs Massaponax, thats all i could find.
Did anybody actually scrimmage this weekend?

KG at Massaponax was rained out Friday. I checked the KG field today and the 3rd base line is a lake. We've had quite a bit of rain the past few months - everything is mucky. Not sure what shape the Massaponax field is in. Talked to the coach today - said they might try to play Wednesday.

Have a home scrimmage vs Rappahannock scheduled for Tuesday.

SPOTSYLVANIA 14, FLUVANNA 10

Jacob King pitched five strong innings and drove in three runs and the Knights scored 11 times in the fifth inning to win their season opener. Trevor Talley drove in three runs and scored four for Spotsylvania.

R H E
Spotsylvania 0101 (11)01 14 10 5
Fluvanna 0225 010 10 6 2
JACOB KING, Trevor Talley and Corey Luttrell. Fluvanna n/a.
MASSAPONAX 13, COURTLAND 3

Ben White, Mike Gallagher and Jason Wiley had two RBIs each in the Panthers’ nondistrict win.
Vinny Cunningham had three hits and also drove in a run for Massaponax (1–1), which plays at Brooke Point in a Commonwealth District game on Friday.

R H E
Massaponax 336 10 13 12 2
Courtland 010 11 3 4 8
AUSTIN CAWTHON, Sho Mendoza (4), Vinny Cunningham (5) and Ben White. NEAL, Zaluzney (4) and Suren.
Tonight 3/16/2012

Caroline: 2 @ King William: 0

Caroline only had 1 scrimmage game (due to weather)this year and that was a win over Essex. Last night was the opening of their regular season.

After talking with some Caroline folks today Coach Dow rotated his pitching staff to give most of them some innings. The pitching staff only gave up two hits against King William. When I said some of them this team is loaded with pitchers. He pitched five pitchers and still had three pitchers not getting into pitch. I bet most of the Battlefield District wished they had this situation. Last night he pitched:

"Tee" Beasly : 2 innings, Hits Allowed:1
Tyler Daig : 2 innings, Hits Allowed: 0
Rory Smith :1 inning, Hits Allowed: 1
Joe Shiflett : 1 inning, Hits Allowed: 0
Sean Pico : 1 inning Hits, Allowed: 0

If Coach Dow can keep this team together and focused through the season they just may go a long way. I have been keeping and eye on this team the last three years because all of them have (except two or three)have been playing Varsity ball for Coach Dow since they were sophomores and freshman.
