oakland,
Although that is a pretty hefty statement for a team that has missed the beach district tournament the past two seasons, i could agree with you in some aspects.
I see the Eagles finishing among the middle of the district this season if they play to there true potential. Coach Mungin is a great coach, and his past proves what he can do with some talent. If the kids play like they can and don't drop there heads when they go down by one run, they might develop some self confidence and realize they can be a good team if they work together. Reasons being:
Junior Kyle Lawhorn (P,IF)
-the kids older brother, Phil, was beach district player of the year in 2003, i believe. kyle has the same cannon as his brother, now playing at u. of west florida and a major league prospect. Kyle's started the past 2 seasons as the eagles number 1 pitcher, and i think he can do big things and turn some heads this year if he has a defense that can back him up and also if he gets some run support.
Senior Cameron Butler (P,C, IF)
-Butler doesnt have a big build but has quick hands and explodes his hips. the kid has power. he reminds me of Landstowns lead-off hitter 3 years ago, Robert Moschetto, a first team all beach selection, now playing college ball somewhere in NY last i heard. Butler tops out in the mid 80's, as does kyle, and these kids have the potential to be a great 1-2 punch in the district, again speaking if they can have some defense and run support. Butler will probably hit lead-off this season. He's also being looked at by Norfolk State and Louisburg JC.
SOPH. Cameron Day (1B)
-this kid is strong and absolutely smokes the ball. he hits hard line drives, and goes to the opposite field alot. He was a 2nd team all beach selection last year as a freshman, and the sky is the limit for this kid. He loves to play ball and has fun out there.
Now Landstown finished 1-19 two years ago, in a last place tie with Green Run. Last season they finished 6-14 i believe, just missing the playoffs, but beat Salem and closed the season with a win a kellam there last 2 games. With this momentum, hopefully the kids will remember what winning felt like at the end of the season last year. I think this squad has worked extra hard in the offseason and knows that they can be a good baseball team, but they have to show what they can do and not talk about it.
I heard they scrimmage at Greenbrier Christian Academy today. LAWMAN might be able to fill us in about the game. They also open the season at FC on Friday. This might give us a glimpse of what to expect.
GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE TEAMS THIS SEASON. Beach play begins tomorrow, Wednesday 12th:
Tallwood at First Colonial
Salem at Princess Anne
Kellam at Cox
