I would think you are right on that one.

Where it gets interesting is "if" OL and FC end up tied, they split during regular season. I don't know how Kellam has done against FC or if they have any left to play.

Would a tie-breaker game be played? coin flip?
Regular season co-champs?

Out of those three possible scenerios I think only thing that makes sense is a 1 game playoff.

although all of this is a non conversation if FC wins out.
I know that the question was re Beach District. In SED, in past years, there has been a 1-game playoff for first because, as Grasscutter states, the winner has an automatic bid for Regionals. It places the loser of that playoff in a weaker position because of the loser having had to expend pitching. So your lower seeded teams (#3 & #4, for example) should be rooting for a tie for first.

If there is a three way tie, I believe there is indeed a coin flip to eliminate one of the three teams and then a playoff game between the remaining two team to decide the champion and automatic bid to regionals (could be wrong)...wouldn't that be fun to watch!!
Bayside - 1
First Colonial - 0
WP-(#14 Bayside)
LP - Justin Keith

Justin Keith and Ryan Cook combined for a 2-hitter for FC; but Bayside's Pitcher (#14) kept FC at bay scattering 8 hits. Tommy Kane showed why he is one of the best catchers in Hampton Roads throwing out 3 FC runners and hitting 2 doubles for Bayside.

If the scenerio ends up a 4 way tie at the top for regular season. Would that now mean no auto qualifier for regionals and the top 2 teams from Beach Tourny represent the Beach?

All of sudden the Beach tourny might be very very interesting!!

Its always fun don't get me wrong but the added importance would make extremely exciting.

Just curious.
WOW!!!!!! what a race to the finish line!!

Four Teams tied atop the Beach Leaderboard! with 2 games to go..

Fridays Senior Night game at OL has huge significance now. Winner is "almost" assured to finish with at least a tie for first barring any more upsets. With the way this season is playing out nothing is certain.

So back to my original question with a little added twist.

What happens in a 3-way tie for 1st during the regular season?

Coin flip, playoff, overall record?

What a great time to be a High School Baseball FAN, or even better than that, a player.

It has definately been a fun 4 yrs of watching for me.
The year PA won the State Title, I believe they finished tied with FC at the end of the regular season. They played a tie breaker to determine the Regular Season Champ and winner of the automatic bid. So in the case that OL wins out and FC does as well, we will probably see a playoff game coming before the tournament starts. Which then we will probably see Morimando go against Cook as Shawn will throw vs Kellam Friday and Ryan the same vs. whoever FC plays this Friday, GR I believe.
there will be a 3 way tie if FC, PA, and the winner of the OL/Kellam game wins out. then what?, PA beat FC twice, FC beat Kellam and OL once, Pa beat OL, Kellam beat PA twice, wow, baseball is a game of inches, the last out of the PA/Fc game is as exciting as it gets, ball is crushed, looks like a walkoff HR, Left fielder playing near the fence, makes a great catch, wow, just a terrific High School baseball game and the umpires were outstanding

Per comments of Pete Zell (head coach Salem) on radio this morning, if 3 or more teams are tied at the end of regular season in the Beach District, there is no automatic bid from regular season to the Eastern Region. The two bids are determined by the Beach District tournament which begins Saturday, May 21.
yep, it looks like Coach Zell is right. In the event of a three way tie, the two teams that make it to the district tournament final will advance to the region tournament.

also, it should be noted that before the season even starts, the board of directors pick numbers out of a hat for each team in case something like this happens...so, whoever has the better numbers will be seeded higher in the tournament.

saipan, I completely agree with you on this ruling! pretty bad!! all three of those teams have earned the opportunity to (at the least) fight for an automatic bid into regionals. I dont know about you, but I'd much rather take my chances with a coin flip and a one game playoff right now than to run the gauntlet of the beach district tournament! especially seeing how balanced the district is at this point and also seeing how hot and streaky teams like bayside and landstown are playing! Anybody can beat anybody on any given day right now!

all that being said, it should be very interesting and very fun to watch!!! Smile
I think I would take my chances as well with the coin flip and playoff. At least one of the top three would for sure get in.

WB Reporter - I'm looking forward to seeing Churchland (Eastern District) playing the Runner-up in the Beach - I think this will be one of the best games of the day.

I actually think the Eastern Regionals first day could be the best it's been over the past couple of years.

Woodside (Mays 8-0) vs (SED Runner-Up)

Churchland (Bratton/Butts) vs (BD Runner-Up)

(GB/WB) vs (Possible Menchville (Lake) or Kecougtan (Cave)

(BD Winner) vs (ED Runner-up)

There is the potential for some really great pitching match-ups!
