Hey Chris,

Back after a six month deployment. I finally get a chance to see a full season of baseball, something I have not been able to do for five years.

Agree, should be ruled an error (son was 2nd baseman); back-handed ball hit up-the-middle and not held onto, unsure of hitters speed, should of had him and at the least a bang-bang play. (looked lethargic getting to the ball; more on that later)

Amarrosa looked good; IMO he was nibbling a little more than I would of liked, especially against Landstown. I would of liked to of seen him challenge them and against a good hitting team he will need to work both sides of the plate. Of course, if he gets that call two-four inches off the plate, then stay out there.

I like Cox's defense; Landstown did bat some balls.
Specifically, the left-side of the infield made the plays with picture perfect throws.

Cameron Butler pitched for Landstown, best-guess estimate 84-85 with a few pitches topping at 86/maybe 87.
He had trouble spotting his fastball (high); but he did a nice job with his breaking pitch; had mound problems (more on that later).

Cox jumped out to a 4-0 leadin their bottom of the first, after a lead-off hit; problems behind the plate hurt Landstown (Butler is the teams best catcher). Strike-out, over throw of first-base after a droped ball; a couple throw-throughs (high-wide)to 2nd on steal attempts with runners on third resulted in couple gift-runs. In the 4th (I believe), with two-outs,there were three runs scored with one ball hit (nice-push bunt past the pitcher on the left side) which loaded the bases after two walks. Passed balls and eradict throw back to the pitcher plated the runs.

With that said and recognizing that it is still early in the season, Cox's hitting must improve if they are to contend at the top of the Beach district; there were a couple nice hits on their part.

As for Landstown, VERY YOUNG. They have three seniors on the team with the First-baseman the only starter. The battery (pitcher-catcher) coupled with the SS are juniors; the rest of the starting line-up included sophmores with the 3rd-baseman and LF brought up from JV. Incidently the left-fielder was DH'ed for by a freshman (#4) hitter; got a base-hit in his first Varsity game.

Initially, they looked unsure and foot-work slow; come to find out that they had just recieved their cleats last week and are not broken-in. (This is that more on that later I was talking about).

As a coach, withouth senior leadership, you just put those that are best-ready to play at Varsity level, then identify what requires work and chart their progression, evaluate for 2008 team.

For the fans, this could be a long season. I heard it and actually went over to the Cox side a couple times to talk about the game/players with a friend and fellow coach (freshman son started in right-field for Cox). The parents are going to have to realize to look at the team for what it is and be patient.

We could cause a few problems for some top tier teams if over-looked and the stars are in alignment.

Hey coach Mundgen, put some blue on the bills of those all-white batting-helmets; they look like little "kazoo's" running around out there; dating myself! lol.

I wasn't at the game (Cox/Landstown) but my wife was telling me that the score would have been a lot closer if Landstown wouldn't have made so many errors. Landstown pitchers only gave up 5 or 6 hits but the errors killed them. Ammorrosa pitched a good game (only gave up 3 hits). My son had one of the hits, producing the only RBI. He also had a couple of stolen bases. Landstown is a very young team (Only one senior starter)so I expect them to struggle this year. Any score on the Kempsville/Salem game?
Lawman- Great synopsis on the game. I agree with just about everything you said. Profilet has great speed so it would've been a bang bang play even if fielded cleanly. Saw they only gave him 3 hits in the paper so whoever called it in scored it an E.

Surprised to see Salem pinned a 6-2 loss on Ramirez. Sounds like they will be a force in the Beach. Anyone have details?

Thanks Joe,
I heard what kept you from the game, sorry I didn't get to see ya. Hopes the weather holds for Friday; knowing how Coach Mundgen likes to baby that field. Big Grin

One thing I missed was that Thomas Doberick (cksp)#17/Sr. looked good in relief (considering how nervous he probably was on the inside); good arc on his breaking ball which he needs to set-up his fastball.

Chris,

I was surpised to see Salem at mid-pack in preason preview; of course that said without knowing what the other teams have. But knowing Coach Zell; he wouldn't have it any other way. Wink

I thought they were a good up-coming young team last year; the chaser for the top spots in the District for 07 and the chase-e, if you would, for 08.

Did Cameron Day play for Landstown?

redbird5,

Yes he did; batted fourth as the DH (for the soph/LF). Picked up a hit his first AB; Not sure official ruling: hit/advance on error or clean double!

He had a noticeable slight lift at the end of his swing. But i talked too him tonight and it looks like he is starting a growth spurt.
salem-6
kempsville-2

kempsville scored one early after ramirez led the game off with a double and the next hitter hit one through the four hole scoring ramirez.

salem later broke through when robby newman scored on a past ball. the next inning kempsvilles third basebaman hit a solo shot making it 2-1. jacob lambeth then hit a solo homer to tie the game for salem.

in the fourth robby newman singled in jimmy grassano putting salem up 3-2.

in the fifth ramirez started to get wild. he quickly walked two and his day was over. kempsville brought in a little lefty finish the fifth. in the sixth salem broke away. with two men on and two outs dan brion hit a three run homerun to put salem up 6-2. he then finished the seventh on the mound for salem. he pitched a complete game. salem looked very impressive in the opener.

Landstown had zero stolen bases versus Cox. Only attempt occured during a bunt back to the pitcher (does not qualify as a steal). No passed balls, no wild pitches.

Correct, the runner advanced on a sac-bunt. The other occassion, the same runner advanced to second, was due to a balk (Amorosso).

The senior righthander for Cox is throwing the ball very well, Willliam & Mary made a good decision to recruit and sign him.

Good to hear! He is a great kid.

About his swing...he just started playing in our organization and we had been working on smoothing out his swing. It appears he has always gotten by with his physical skills and hasn't had too much coaching.

Salem defeated Kempsville 6-2.

Kempsville scored in the top of the first with Ramiez getting leadoff double followed by a single.
In the bottom of the first Jimmy Grassano doubled off Ramiez's first pitch setting tone for things to come.

With the score tied at 2-2 after Jake Lambeth hit a solo home run off Ramiez, Jimmy Grassano doubled off Ramiez and Robbie Newman singled him home to take the lead.

In the bottom of the 6th with 2 outs, Grassano doubled, Newman was walked and Dan Brion hit a 3 run homer to put Salem up 6-2.

Dan Brion pitch a complete game and hit a 3 run homer. Jake Lambeth went 3-3 with a home run while Jimmy Grassano was 3-4 with 3 doubles.
No doubt - you always play to win one game at a time - but you also have to play the odds too....and the odds are - Bayside has been very average over the past few years and Cox is the team to beat (newspaper) this year. So the odds would say I take my chances against you guys with my #2 and #3 and my #1 would give me the best shot against Cox. Maybe even use my #1 to close if I have to against you guys, and bring him back on Friday with 4 days of rest.

You team is going to surprise some people. You guys will be in the top this year.
Wise....Maybe Paul took my advice or read my email prior to your game - Nah, I doubt it. Good Luck to you on Friday.

Bayside has played in two tough games the past two days. Bayside losses to Kempsville 7-4. It was 4-4 for 6 innings and gave up three in the 7th on walks. Ramirez pitched the last two striking out 5 of 6 batters faced.

Bayside battled with Cox today with the score 4-4 once again. In the top of the fifth, the umpire missed a call for the score to be 5-4 Bayside, but remained 4-4. In the bottom of the sixth Cox score two runs on some timely hitting.

John Deschamps pitched a great game for Bayside, keeping Cox's top three to one hit. Reid closed the game for Cox and did a great job.

Good Luck to all the teams and I think it is going to be an exciting season.

Bayside @ FC on Friday. One heck of a way to start your season.
