My thoughts on the Beach this year, after 3/4 of the season I think its safe to say the Beach is a one horse race. Kellam is the only team that will compete with the SED. Every team after Kellam seems about even with the exception of Bayside, they are terrible. So whats the deal? what is the decline of the other Beach programs? Is the coaching that much better in the SED than in the Beach? is the talent just better in the SED? IMHO it seems all of the above, while their are some excellent players in the Beach it seems the SED has more great player, and while there are some truely outstanding coaches in the Beach, by in large SED caoches are better. I know a few Beach teams are missing key players, Cox is missing 2 key player, PA is missing a key player, but I still think those teams are only 1 or 2 wins better than they are now even with those key players. As for the players, the Beach has some studs, Sinnen boys, Bishop, Worthly, Faison, Brown, Tharp, Pizzela but I would say that the SED has more studs. Look at the beach teams, other than kellam, each Beach team has 1 or 2 studs but if you look at a SED team they all seem to have 4-5 or more per team. So whats the outlook for the Region, well I think it a safe bet that more than likely Great Bridge and Kellam will be the 2 to advance, I am not saying its a done deal but it is pretty clear who the 2 best teams are. As for POY's at this point, seems safe to give the nod to Connor Jones for the SED and Josh Worthly for the Beach with Jones the Tidewater POY but then again the obvious never seems to be true when it comes to those things again, these are just my humble opinions, what say you?

Can definitely see Jones as the region/tidewater POY but don't know enough about top players throughout VA to say state POY. I'm sure someone will have another horse they want to put their money on for that honor.
As far as the topic, believe the title wasn't accurate to content since it was basically a statement/opinion why SED is better than the Beach. Top to bottom they probably are but the Beach isn't a done deal yet and there are a couple teams that are beginning to mature and improve at the right time. I'll wait and see how it plays out. There are players out there that aren't playing showcase/AAU who are having great years and will play a big role come tournament time.
Dawgs, While I strongly agree with you, strange things always seem to happen when it comes to the POY/All district voting.
Rainout, I guess my post could come accross as you stated, what I am really asking is what is the reason for the decline of the overall quality of high school baseball in the Beach?
Playright, I think it has a lot to do with two connected points. One is that not as many kids from all the beach teams are playing AAU/Showcase team year round. Secondly, those kids aren't playing AAU with their team year round building that team chemistry during the offseason while improving their ability. Look at how many of the Kellam kids have or are playing together outside of school. Then go see how many kids at say Bayside/Green Run/Tallwood/etc are playing. More Beach atheletes are turning to football and basketball as well since the scholarship offers are much greater for the best atheletes than they are in baseball. 20/25% average on an out of state tuition bill isn't much at all. This is only my opinion. If you disagree that's great but please do not shoot me! lol
I believe what you say is true and I will go as far as to say if you look at the top performers in the beach the majority of them come from one travel/showcase team....the Drillers.
The lack of involvement in travel/showcase is concerning. At the HS level, there really isn't much talent at the Beach to choose from. The better players have played together with the Drillers and had great success under Matt Sinnen, Ian Morrison and Brooks Sinnen. As a Canes coach & recruiter, we have found better talent in the SED (other than the Drillers kids. We tried to bring them into the fold with no luck). They appear to be more committed to play baseball at a younger age and develop through HS.
