Wow, what a beautiful night for the opener here in MN! Sunny and 66 degrees in early April!

Our HS faced the team who had knocked them out of playoffs last year. My 04 RHP son got the Win AND the Save ... first time he's ever done that in one game! He had a 4-run lead after 5 innings, switched to 1st base for the 6th, but the reliever struggled through the 6th and gave up 2 runs and said he would prefer not to pitch the 7th. My son's arm wasn't tired so he offered to pitch the 7th. (Just so no "lurkers" think his arm was abused ... he was feeling better every inning and threw only 9 pitches in the 5th, and only 8 in the 7th.)

Okay, that's my "I'm so glad baseball is here!" post for this year! Best wishes to all your sons!

Congratulations to your son and on the beautiful weather.
With a 90% chance of rain in the forecast we played yesterday afternoon. Cloudy skies and a few sprinkles but we got the game in. My 8th grader pitched for a couple of innings but did not do well. We lost 10 to 1. The coach said he only had 2 earned runs from the score, but frustration was setting in. He went to his main position: catcher. We came back and won the second game.
Hope you have a great year!
MNMom - What a GREAT start to the season! Congratulations to Joey!

InfieldMom - No worries for your youngster - I'm sure he'll settle down. My son pitched a wild one yesterday in a closely fought game until the bottom of the 7th inning, when he walked the first batter, got the second batter to ground into a DP, and then proceeded to WALK the next two batters (with a little help from Blue, IMHO Eek Mad). He then FINALLY gets the other team's lead-off hitter to ground out after taking him to a 3-2 count... to get the 1 - 0 win. I can laugh about it now, but at the time, it was just a bit tense in the stands, as you might imagine.... (and yes, I DID use some of my newly-learned 'Blue' comments, much to my son's embarrassment). I'm just glad I didn't stop for coffee before the game! Big Grin
Thanks for the words of encouragement, Blue! I don't think I can blame the umpire for my son's pitching woes. A combination of walks and errors definitely didn't help. But after every pitching appearance he comes off the mound telling me that he is a catcher, not a pitcher. I am glad everything worked out for your son. Your son's embarrassment reminds me of my oldest son's comment after one of his high school games. After one of his high school away games he asked me if I had been yelling during the game. I wondered why he would ask that(generally he tunes everyone but the coach out). When his team took the field(he was a first baseman) the other team's coach asked if his mom was here. I think I must have been a little to loud in voicing my displeasure with the plate umpire's calls when my son was up to bat. Red Face
