My son is very iinterested in playing college baseball, but is also being recruited for football. A division I school has sent him a letter for an unofficial visit to their school. It is to meet the coaches, see the school and go to a basketball game. Is it okay to contact the baseball coach before hand and ask to speak with him also?

I will tell you upfront that I have not faced this issue yet, but my son does play multiple sports at the varsity level. I think...most Div I coaches are not interested in duel players. By that, I think... they want a committment to their sport at the college level. I think...at smaller Div. I or Div III schools, it may be a plus because often times they need bodies, particularly for football. You have every right to speak with the baseball coaches. In general, being upfront would be the best policy. Tell them you are considering other sports. You can never go wrong with speaking honestly.
Bagsbaseball,
No problem in talking to the baseball coach. Understand the NCAA will not allow a player to be on scholarship in a minor sport (baseball) and participate in a major sport (football). The NCAA does allow a player to be on a football scholarship and also play baseball but if that does happen, it will put the football coach calling the shots as to whether or not your son can play baseball. Be sure to ask the football coach what his position is on this matter.

I know a player at UCF who managed both; the baseball coach was thrilled as it gave him an excellant player on a full ride for football. Because of that, any concessions he had to make were pretty much painless. He did, however, hold his breath somewhat during football season. The player was on special teams, though, so his exposure to injury was limited.
