My son ('07) played summer ball in St. Charles, MO with a boy ('06) who is going there this year as a member of their baseball team. Great kid, very talented, who was home-schooled by his equally fine parents. My son told me he was the nicest, most polite kid he ever met. As talented as he was, being home-schooled excepted him from playing high school baseball in this state...hence, he had to rely almost entirely on summer ball to make a name for himself. Obviously, he did.
Belhaven is a Christian (Presbyterian) school within the city limits of Jackson, MS. It is considered excellent academically and is an up and coming baseball program. The team qualified for the NAIA post season last year after winning their conference. There are high hopes for this year's squad also. They have great baseball facilities - check out their website (www.belhaven.edu). They play in a former minor league ballpark and have a nice locker room/clubhouse in this facility. They also have there old ballpark closer to campus that is available for their practice use. The athletic programs are emphasized at Belhaven. Hill Denson is the head coach (for about the last six years) - he previously coached at Southern Miss Univ. for years. Coach Denson has a wealth of baseball knowledge and has a very likeable personality. Last year, Belhaven won both games they played against D-II powerhouse Delta State Univ. The campus is rather small, but very nice. The campus is located in an older neighborhood of Jackson, with a good bit of renovation occuring among the older homes - not a bad area. The student population is fairly racially and geographically diverse - many international students, in addition to those from across the country.
