Not a scrimmage game but is in lieu of one.  Not necessarily 9 innings but can be.

A benefit game is a creature of the VHSL rules, specifically 54-3-4 of the VHSL Handbook and Policy Manual.  Rule 54-3-1 states that no member school may permit, in the case of baseball, its teams or athletes to participate in more than 20 regular season games.  However, where there is a rule, there is an exception, particularly in exchange for money.

"54-3-4 Benefit Game-These games are optional, one per revenue sport, and may not extend the season. They do not count against the season limitation in that sport, will not count on a school's record . . . . Benefit Games must be revenue producing. After expenses, the competing schools will each receive one-third of the net income and the remaining one-third share will be sent to the VHSL. A Benefit Game may be played anytime prior to the end of the regular season but after players have met minimum practice requirements for that sport (example: 15 practices for football) and must be in lieu of an authorized scrimmage. Schools have the option of extending play beyond the normal length. . . . Benefit Games must be approved in advance by the VHSL."

Western Branch has used Benefit Games for many years so that it can play an extra game on its annual spring break trip.

Midlo,  Helps to look in the "little black books."

Hanover wins 5-4

Good game but a little sloppy.  I would venture to guess that 7 of the 9 runs were unearned.

Good pitching performances by Grey Lyttle, John Gregory and Hayden Moore from Hanover.  Lyttle and Gregory were sitting 85-87 and both mixed in good breaking balls.  Moore was featuring a solid curveball throughout his 2 innings as well.

Great Bridge managed to overcome an early deficit when Dane Smith and Charlie Cody ignited 2 separate rallies to account for their 4 runs.

Trevor Denton smashed the ball all day and then executed a perfect suicide squeeze to plate the walk-off tally in the bottom of the 9th.

All in all a great tilt for those in attendance.

The teams donated their proceeds to a young girl from Hanover HS who suffers from cystic fibrosis and is in the hospital.

No word as to whether the VHSL chose to pocket their share.............
