High profile team that doesn't have a very good reputation for being honest with people.
They travel the country and put on "tryouts" for the team at $195 a person. This is how they fund their team for the year and makes Mr. Bort income. There are reports of Mr. Bort claiming he's a Yankees scout, but the Yankees won't confirm this.
If they are soliciting you to tryout for the team, be very, very skeptical. What they are really soliciting you for is your $195. That money is probably better spent elsewhere.
I am hoping to hear more about this. I grew up in Bergen Beach Brooklyn and I believe this organization may be an off shoot of the original Youth League that played under the local church (St Bernards) name in the 60's and 70's. The Church found out the member who ran the league for the parish was skimming money had players who were not from the community etc. The Church took their name off the league. It was a big scandal in the community. I believe that is when it changed from St Bernards to Bergen Beach. I don't know if this present organization is related to that one since the church member died some time ago.
You can Google them and find their web page (NY organization). My son was phoned last year and invited to their tryout in Georgia (Athens). The hook was the "scholarship" and opportunity to play in Puerto Rico.
He called two or three times. I felt that it was just another money raising camp/tryout scheme like all the other Camp/Showcase mailings you get at that point in time (HS Junior year).
Steve called my son years ago (pretty sure it was 2007), asked him to play for him at the CABA World Series. We had no idea who the guy was. We did some checking and decided to take him up on his offer. Drove up to Ohio and met Mr. Bort the night before the first game. Yes he is a little different (not surprised by the phone call mentioned in another post) but he does put together very good players. It was clear that his team was the team to beat. There were alot of scouts & college coaches at every one of the games, the players got along great, Steve was entertaining and they won the series (his team has won the event 15 times). Was Bergan Beach Baseball "THE" reason why my son got his scholarship, NO. Don't all the summer/fall teams/organizations claim, or should I say make it sound like, it was because of them "their" players got scholarships? Good teams/organizations attract good players who attract scouts & college coaches. Bottom line its the player who gets the scholarship (by his performance) period. Teams/organizations put players in front of people, that's their primary function. If your son is asked to play for Mr. Bort you would be mistaken not taking him up on his offer.
I've been to that CABA event in Euclid,OH and my son's team played against Bergen Beach. Everything you have described is true concerning that tournament.
