My son (2015 RHP) received a phone call on his cell from a guy Steve Bort. He claimed to be an area scout.  He rattled off some major league players that played for him, and asked my son if he would come to a showcase he was running. (Getting any more detailed info from a 16 year old is difficult at best) He told him that he would email him some info and call him again on Monday. He did send the email and I looked it over but I don't know about this. It listed some mlb players, info on CABA World Series, and his Future Prospects team. Does anyone know anything about this?

This team has been around for years and my son received a similar call in 2009 and again in 2010 - after he was headed to college, In the past Mr. Bort has used these "showcases" as "tryouts" for his team listed in the post above. I would do a look up of the Bergen Beach team and Mr. Bort on this website and have my eyes wide open before sending money. JMHO.

I'll echo birdman14's sentiment. I received calls as well.

Also, I don't know how much this applies to readers of this forum (it'd mostly apply to travel team coaches), but please do not advertise your organization as "placing" players in professional or college baseball like the Bergen Beach website RJM linked to does. No one placed the players at the next level except themselves. People assist players, they don't place them. Just a pet peeve of mine.

I know this thread is old, but I received several calls this week from him. I generally don't answer numbers I don't recognize, but after the 4th call, I picked up. He thought it was my son's number. Didn't like that his intro was, "I'm a baseball scout", not coach, but scout. Anyway, I told him I'd pass his number along to my son, which I won't.

RUN RUN RUN.  My son went with him to a world series in Cleveland, Ohio several years ago.  They did not do good and he left the kids at the hotel on the last day and they did not even go to the game.  The kids had to find a ride home or to the airport.  They were not supposed to fly out until the next day but he did not pay the room fee for the last night so kids were left in the lobby or parents having to pay for a room.  My son was fortunate enough to find a ride with a parent that was there and driving.  We drove about 8 hours and met them.  He will throw A Rod name around a lot.  It was a nightmare.  Big life lesson for us and my son.

Sorry I don't mean to make light of any bad experiences with this fellow - but I can't help chuckling as this reminds me of the old "Jerky Boys" crank calls.

"Look here, jerky, I'm the best and you're gonna play for me!  That's right, ARod, Jeter, Yastrzemski - I coached em all and placed them in da majors!  I could coach a bat boy and make him MVP.  YOU BETTER WISE UP PLAYAH AND JOIN MY SQUAD!  GIVE ME YOUR CREDIT CARD NUMBAH OR I'M GONNA COME DOWN THERE AND GIVE YOU A BEATIN.

I remember listening to those crank calls on cassette tapes (yes I'm that old)!  Hilarious and better than the TV show they had years later.

So as mentioned, I never gave his number to my son. He called me back yesterday and before he could go into any details, I mentioned my 2020 is committed, and has shut it down for the fall. Turns out he was calling about my 2022, so I have no idea what tournament he is calling about.

I told him my 2022 was busy playing HS ball, he was actually very polite, and didn't push. Maybe he realized he wasn't going to get anywhere with me.
