Only a mom will understand this.

Yesterday son pitched 3 innings/extra innings to take our team to the Chamionship Game. As soon as the high fives between the teams were done, he ran off the field looking to give me, his old mom, a hug. Good thing I had sunglasses on, I was tearing up alot. That was even better than the "No Hitter" game ball he gave me for Mother's Day.

I guess now that he's 14 he doesn't have to be too cool to have parents anymore.

Is this the age they break out of too cool for mom?

I think you should just enjoy every minute of it! Its hard to tell when he becomes too cool. My oldest one still lets me call him 'honey' out on the field and it has become the standing joke with the team--its a good thing that he is 'man' enough to take it and smile. Sometimes part of me thinks the rest of the team is a bit jealous! Now, catcher #2 nearly DIES and gives me the evil eye when a little 'honey' slips out when he is out there.
Congratulations to your son! And to you. That's awesome.

Mine is 14, too, and has a totally different persona when he's around his teammates than when he's at home. I had to stop calling him "Hon'" in public a couple of years ago. He's way cool when teammates are around, but I get plenty of hugs at home! So it's OK. Smile
All depends on the kid --- through travel ball, hs, college, and now pro, I get hug & kiss greetings across the fence and post game. One guy in college dared to say something.....once. Big Grin

A young pitcher I had coached was throwing in his first hs game and was, not surprisingly, struggling in the first inning. I was coming from work to see him and arrived after the game had started. When I started yelling encouragement, said encouragement involved the word 'honey' and all the parents got on me about nor calling a Young Man 'honey'. Well, he quickly got into his groove, and they allowed as I could call him anything I wanted. They used the 'honey' bit throughout the season --- it lightened him up when he was tense!
This past weekend in the KY vs Louisville football game, UK won. That's our first win against a top 10 team in 30 years as well as a BIG win against our in-state rival. Well, the first thing our star quarterback did after the game... which was won in the last minute, was to go find his mom on the sideline to hug her! Watching that, the kid will always have a fan in me!! Smile Those boys can win our hearts so very easily!

It's a pleasure too when they mature enough to allow the hugs and the "honey" and so forth we call them at home. Sweet feeling! Smile
I have found that I have been the lucky recipient of MORE public displays of "mom" hugs and kisses
from my son the older he gets! When he was "younger" I think he thought he was "too cool" for that kind of display. But now....he thinks nothing of giving me a hug after a game no matter who is around. I remember thinking last season how happy he made me after a collge game when he was signing autographs along the fence for a group of young kids. I kind of sat to the side enjoying the sight...when he called me over and gave me a hug in front of all the kids. LOL...kind of made ME feel like a bit of a celebrity! LOL.
Congratulations!

Brings back memories.

2006 season son pitched the final two innings to get us to Omaha. It was bedlam but I could see, through my tears that he was looking for us the entire time.
He motioned for us to meet him in the bullpen, and before he met with those who wanted an interview, he came to meet us with hugs and kisses and balled his eyes out, only making us cry more.
The photo guys were very respectful of this family moment and put down their camaras, but darn I really wish I could have a memory of that moment other than in my heart. cry
My parents who are in their 70's and work full time jobs rarely miss one of my son's ballgames. they travel in the summer and even go to games I am too tired to drive to. After every game, my son find his grandparents and hugs them and thanks them for coming to the game. Last year during school ball and this year with our summer team, I started noticing other boys coming up and thanking them and telling them how much they enjoyed having them at games. I never realized how much the boys noticed until my dad was sick this summer and missed a tournament. Several boys came up and said how much they missed them and even the coaches were worried. Maybe our kids enjoy having us at games more than we realize and maybe they are not such a bad generation.
