Best of the 757 Baseball

The final event of the Best of the 757 combine series gave the baseball athletes a chance to strut their stuff. Approximately 50 athletes participated in the combine which measured five Nike SPARQ events including the 30-yard dash, 60-yard dash, vertical jump, power ball toss, and the 5-10-5 shuttle. The first half of the combine featured the testing and the latter part was used for skill development.
After all the results were tallied, Portsmouth Christian outfielder Leland Clemmons was proclaimed the Best of the 757 baseball winner. Clemmons had the strongest finish in the 60-yard dash with a top time of 6.53 and his power ball toss of 44 was among the best. Clemmons (5-foot-8, 154) played at Indian River last year and he is headed to UNC Charlotte when his high school career is done.
Hickory infielder Spenser Carter and Western Branch freshman Kyle McPherson were the fastest out the gate with both posting a 3.59 to win the 30-yard dash. The power throw measured strength and both Josh Mason and Kellyn Simons had a score of 46. Mason, from Bishop Sullivan Catholic, made the All-Camp team and was one of the best looking prospects all day.
The 5-10-5 (also known as the shuttle) was won by outfielder Alexander Loftin from Green Run. Loftin had a time of 4.35 barely edging Tyler Brown from Nansemond River and Bruce Reid from Hampton Roads Academy. One of the smallest players on the field had the best vertical jump. Freshman Dane Smith from Great Bridge top the leapers with a height of 31.4. Smith showed his leaping ability during the hitting drills while patrolling the middle infield.
