I'd like to hear the best baseball advice you've ever received. Sometimes the best advice is just one simple line from someone who really knows what it takes to make it.

Jeff Holly, former pitcher with the White Sox and Twins, told my son:

"I'm not here to make you the best 12 year old baseball player out there. I'm here to make you the best 18 year old player."

Interesting question.

My favorite is from Ted Williams who was the greatest hitter of all time imho. The guy he learned from was Rogers Hornsby. He said the best advice he ever got from Hornsby was to "Find a good pitch to hit." Seems overly simple, but makes alot of sense if you can lay off stuff you shouldn't be swinging at.
From a couple of former Minnesota Twins:

Gary Gaetti remembers a piece of advice his father once gave him:
"Swing hard, in case you hit it."

And I can't remember or find the exact quote from manager Tom Kelly, but it was something like this: upon being asked the best pitch his pitcher throws:
"Strike one."

Having been in the locker room (DC Stadium) in the 60's, the funniest of lines from Mr. Williams was when asked by a reporter who he'd like to be [if he was not managing the Senators]
answ: "I'd like to be like Larry Dolby!"

email for the details

I remember once a player came in and complained about the condition of the field as a ball took as he said a "bad" hop. Coach said Anybody can catch the good hops good players catch the bad ones.

Same coach A kid said the word if before something to which the coach replied if the queen had *&^%^& she would be the king.

An excuse is like your *&^&*()_*& everybody has one and they all stink.
when i was in LL.a mom came to practice and wanted to know why her son didn't play.the coach says "my son wants to be in the band, but he can't play an instrument".the mom says then why does he want to be in the band?coach says"exactly my point why does your son want to play baseball"?
one other kid says coach my arm hurts.as it always did after he gave up 4 runs.coach says you ain't throwin hard enough to hurt your arm.
things were different in those days.

Our oldest son said Mike Matheney told him to...

"Play for an audience of One."

TXMom,

That is my choice as the very best one liner, so far! Not sure everyone will fully understand, but that just might be the most valuable advice of all.

That audience of one should be either the smartest baseball person you know or the one person in baseball most important to you.
PG,

Curious if you think there might be problems on the horizon if this "audience" is not the player's present manager noidea If someone other than the manager, might a player be playing to the wrong audience? Curious what your take might be.
