best pitcher ever?

i would have to say clemens. others have more impressive numbers but he pitched in a time when the game was dominated by hitting, and mostly in the american league.

There are many great pitches through out baseball history. I think Roger Clemens now has to be considred as one of the best ever. As for the most dominant pitcher during there time i would have to say Bob Gibson. If u get a chance check out his stats from 1968 when he played for the cardinals, on mlb.com.

Yes Nolan Ryan was very dominant, but Gibson pitched during a period of time when pitchers ruled the game. During this time Gibson was almost unhittable.
In 1998 Gibson's ERA was 1.12, that is pretty dominant.
He also had 17 k's in a world series game

Sandy Koufax with Gibson a close second.

Everyone mentioned here would be a good choice and there are many others that would be good choices.

My vote - Roger Clemens - 7 Cy Young's - and for the reasons "Irishpride" mentioned in his post. Except I think his numbers are right up there with most anyone.

And... He's still one of the very best today!

Satchel Paige is the best in my opinion. He was 7-1 in the majors as a middle aged rookie. 2000 wins in 2500 games pitched is amazing. If he would have pitched in the majors in his prime he would have dominated. He played against the best major leaguers and beat them. The Babe was even afraid to hit against him.

Greg Maddux has not only one over 300 games, 4 Cy Young's, but he has been awarded the "Golden Glove" as the best fielding pitcher more than any active pitcher. When he signed out of high school he was a power pitcher, up to 94 mph. He learned and had the talent to figure out how to win "BIG" in the Big Leagues. Plus he was not the tall, big, prototype RHP.

In my estimation Greg Maddux is one of the most "talented" pitchers in history.

I did notice you mentioned him as your pick for the best. That's a pretty good choice.

Walter Johnson. I read something that if they had a radar back when he played it would've been easily over a hundred. Lefty Grove is the best lefty ever

Just like what IrishPride said, he has pitched in a time where its more of a hitters game, but yet he has still dominated.

Gotta give the love to John Rocker. Haha he is the WORST pitcher ever. The best in my opinion is Pedro Martinez.

I would have to say the best lefty ever was Warren Spahn. 363 wins, the most ever by a lefty. He didn't have the best stuff, but he had perfect location.

roger clemens hes gonna get his 8th cy young this year-thats amazing at such an old age

im gonna have to say tom seaver was the smartest pitcher of all time, he threw exactly what the hitters didnt think was coming. combine that with his stuff and long gevity, thats one hell of a pitcher

roger clemens. with 7 cy youngs, that guy is rockin. and he also played on a team in my home town. jealous? lol.

Walter Johnson: 417 wins. That's more than Clemens will ever have, and Johnson played on some MISERABlE Senators teams.

Bob Feller: If he hadn't gotten hurt, (and I think he missed time while in the military), he would probably top all of our lists. I read that he could throw 109 MPH. That's insane.

Christy Matthewson: 3 World Series shutouts in 6 days. That's gotta make hime one of the greatest clutch pitchers EVER. He also was a huge contributor to McGraw's early Giants dynasty. He also picked up baseball's reputation by being the original 'Nice Guy' ballplayer.

These 3 have got to have excellent claims to 'Best Ever' certainly more so than Clemens, Seaver, Ryan, Maddux, Martinez, or.......Peavy

Gotta go with Rocket. That guy is so old and still so good, he's going to retire close to 50 years old!

If you are talking about pure filthy stuff, go with Eric Gagne or K-Rod.
