I agree in that in most cases the best players do need to play up just to stay challenged and develop to their fullest. Of course in some areas there are select teams of a particular age group that are much more advanced than your average "travel" team. In this case the quality player playing on that caliber team can probably remain challenged within his current age group.

I'm not sure I agree that most good high school players "come out of nowhere". In this day and age with so many high quality summer teams and professional baseball instructions being offered to kids at a very young age, most quality players have been groomed and instructed for a number of years prior to HS.
