Son is a Junior and our season is about completed. Playoffs will start next week. When is the best time to send out a follow-up letter with recap of the season and summer schedule? Now or in May/June?

I would suggest doing a season ending one and then another right after the playoffs as a final season recap

Some coaches do not read emails some do--a fax is not out of order but to make sure it gets to them a letter works best. The final step is to follow up with a phone call
As for info I like it more along the lines of the success of the team and the players role in the success

My junior is halfway through his season and just sent out followup letters with copies of articles and game results. He also followed up with an email and has been getting replies back from the coaches thanking him for the update.
