In general or in a specific area?
My son can play short stop, pitches and catches. Im not sure what is best the general or specific teams. which is most advantages for the positions he play
I think my son's 2017 travel squad is pretty good. Beat the Houston Banditos in a tournament in June. Made the championship round every tournament.
I guess the team should have paid money to participate in PG tournaments earlier.
I've seen some pretty good American Legion teams during regionals in Kansas last year.
You could probably look at travel tournaments in big cities and see which team consistently is the top tier finishers.
he turn 14 this month
Where do you live. At 14u he should be looking for a team that can help develop his skills.
You need to do two things. 1) Talk with parents in your area to find out which travel teams are the best coaches. Don't be fooled by a team winning most of its games. Some of these coaches can recruit but can't teach. 2) Be honest with yourself about your son's potential. When I talked to parents I discounted what dad said by 10-20% and what mom said by 20-40%.
Define how much you want to spend and how much you want travel. Those 2 things change your answer
Also ask about how well the travel ball coach organizes the roster and the travel. When in Atlanta at a PG tourney one year, I was shocked to find out that some travel ball coaches actually plan ahead, schedule their players and give the families the playing times of their players ahead of time. Who knew! That way, if a player has a college coach they are trying to connect with, the player can send the coach their playing schedule. Contrast that to our team, where the coach might tell the parent the night before to 'get to Atlanta by tomorrow'. Last minute tickets. Ouch! So, yes 'coaching' is important but good communication skills can make for a really fun adventure (and not make the parents regret the cost of that adventure.)
On my sons team for showcases the boys always know in advance what innings and what postion they will be at, in tournament games they do not.
