Big Train is #1
We started going to Big Train games the summer after my son finished first grade, in 2001. In 2003, we hosted a player for the first time, and my son was a bat boy. In 2006, I took over the host family program, and in 2009 I added events. One year we had 3 players living with us. I have watched this team fight to compete in the Clark Griffith League, when we had to take pride in just beating the other teams in our county. At that point, we just wanted to be able to win a championship. Three years in a row, both regular season champs and winning the end-of-year tournament, and now #1 in the country... no one was dreaming that big.
Big Train is one of the most popular entertainment options for a summer night in Bethesda, a place that already offers many choices. Our ball park, Shirley Povich Field, is a place that makes Bethesda feel like a small town, and regular fans get to know each other well. Our host family network has grown to over 25 families, with more on a waiting list, and new families every summmer. Every summer, something happens that makes a difference in the lives of these players and our host families.
If you live near a summer wooden bat team, get as involved as you can. It may not be #1 in the nation, but it can change your life.
