This game is at Manchester I believe... As with most District rivalries this is the first of probably three games the teams will play against each other. Manchester, with its power hitters, has a huge advantage this game if it is on their field which is known to be the smallest field in the area other than RF&P..... should rename the field "Rf&P South"
The way Manchester is playing it will be tough for anyone to hang with them.
I am wondering if given the fact that the teams will see each other three times if they will throw their aces? I saw a comment in the paper by Manchester's coach that when they played one of the Regional teams over Spring break they held back their #1 guy so that team would not get a look at him in case they meet in the Regional playoffs.
Could be the case here with two teams who could battle it out for the District championship like they did last year? Will have to check the paper tomorrow to see if the coaches do any stratagizing....both teams #1 pitchers should be available coming off of Spring Break
From what I have seen it will take a tremendous effort by any pitcher to shut down the Manchester batting order 3 time through the line up. The biggest thing with teams like that is you just cant afford to let people get on base through walks and mistakes so when the big blow comes it costs you 2 or 3 runs at a time. Solid defense, limiting walks, is a must. Dont know what kind of catcher Cosby has but shutting down the running game will be important as well.
Manchester can mash, but Cullen, not exactly a power pitcher held them at bay. I don't see being unbeatable. I doubt they lose games with Morrison on the mound. No disrespect to the Lancers, they are a helluva team. With no consistent #2, they could be vulnerable in 2nd or 3rd game of the week.
I predict Manchester/Cosby will split for the year with Manchester winning at their wiffle ball field and Cosby winning at their cavernous field. These are probably the two strongest hitting teams in the District this year. They both have hitting experience (and depth) over a young and talented JR team. Ben Florence should emerge as a strong #2 at Manchester. He pitched well last year as a sophomore. I'd like to see him pitch this year to see how he is coming along.
Florence is an early verbal commit to VMI. He has been running an effortless looking 86-88 in games. Curve is very good though it sometimes comes and goes, something you expect to iron out as you get deeper into the season. He and Morrison, combined with all those bats, will be tough to beat come playoff time.
