Yesterday was very hard. I left my son in Baton Rouge to begin his college journey. While I am extremely proud of everything he has done to get himself to this point, it was also very emotional driving away. Like I know is true for most of you, he and I are very close. He is my only son and the baby of 4. It was tough each time one of my girls left, but this was just different. I will miss all those trips. Atlanta, Ft Myers, Jupiter just to name a few. Up until this time it was usually the two of us traveling together. Mom would come sometimes, but so often it was a guy's trip. He is my best male friend and I'm gonna miss him so much. At the same time, I realize he has an opportunity so few are afforded. This is what is keeping me going. For all of you that still have sons at home, enjoy the ride!  I don't care how many times you hear it, you really will not appreciate its meaning until you are standing in my shoes. I feel so much like a lost puppy. Sorry I am "sappy" this early in the morning. One chapter ends but another begins. Geaux Tigers!!

Thanks YG

Congrats YG. I too will make that last ride in a few weeks. You are right about the road trips, they are special. We've had mom along for a few of them and those are fun too, but there's something about our "Bro"ad trips that trump those. I only took road trips with my dad when i was working with him as a young kid and am thankful that i had the chance to be a part of my son's baseball journey...to be continued.... btw, i have lots of friend over in La....i wish your son the best, great people..even better baseball.

Congrats younggun!!  It is a special time and I know those feelings well.  BTW, seems like a great time for your son to be on campus in Baton Rouge!

A new chapter begins - it will be every bit as rewarding if not moreso than the one you just finished.  Have a great time!!

(For me though, much harder to send our older daughter off to college - teary eyed for a day at least - every time we put her back on that plane ).

Congrats and no apology required on the sappiness!  I bet most if not all of us dads went through that same emotional roller coaster when we 1st dropped our sons off at college.

Savor those thoughts and memories, those times spent together should always remain special.

I could tell you to wait until you see him in six months, that little boy you left will become a man, but I don’t want to ruin that surprise for you.

If you think its  tough dropping him off somewhere wait until the day you watch him drive off on his own to go back to school or go join his summer team.  My son was home for 1 and ½ days for before he drove away this year.  Mom spent $400 at the grocery store for his one night home?? She was crying over him leaving and I was thinking get the heck out of here I can’t afford you being in the house….

It is hard, I took my baseball playing son last fall. Only 20 minutes away but one of the previous son's I took 3 hours away. Cried all the way there (we drove separate cars so he couldn't see me blubber)  and most of the way back. Last Friday, my son took off for summer ball. Home 2 nights and off he went. It gets easier but not much.

I have been blessed all year with the ability to go watch most of when he played and when I couldn't I could watch on computer. His summer team does not offer video so I am attached to the audio on the computer. Not the same thing.

Like someone else said, it is amazing how they become men while they are gone.

younggun,

I just tweeted about the amazing amount of talent in Georgia these days.  We are so lucky that we get to see most all these kids that go to the next level.  It hurts a lot to see them go, but that can't be avoided.

BTW,  If I was in charge of a MLB club, Jalen Miller would not end up at Clemson.  If that does happen, he will be one of the first picks in a few years.

Its hard, but you will realize the first time that you go see your son (fall games to end fall practice) you will know that he is where he should be.

You now will experience something different, you and mom will go to games, meet new parents, appreciate those late night meals after the game, or lunches before the bus comes and what its like being at away games.

Best of luck to your son, and ENJOY THE RIDE!!!!!

PG,

I just wanted to tell you that DK was with a team this weekend at the Tourney and they played at Lake Point a few times. My son says to give you guys a pat on the back, it is an awesome facility and as much as they didn't get a win, for a young 16U team it was a great first experience and for him as a coach as well.

He also said that he understands why Georgia has such great young talent, and IHO, FL needs to step up to the plate.

I can't comment about the prices or gate fees, as he came as a coach.

youngun,

Congrats and I still remember the feeling of a knot in my stomach when my wife and I drove away from the college heading to the airport when we first dropped my son off a little over four years ago. Great, proud, and yet sad feeling. I wanted to call him every night to get an update but knew I could not and had to let him go. Wow, really brings back some memories. Best of luck to your son. (and you, who will likely have a more difficult time adjusting)
