Fausto Carmona became a real "player to be named later" when it was discovered his real name is Willie Hernandez. He "borrowed" Carmona's birth certificate to prove he was sixteen** at the time. He was a couple of years older.

** most desired age of Caribbean recruits for signing

Here's a guy taken 2nd in the draft.  He was a 20/20 guy earlier in his career and will probably be a 12-13 year MLB guy.  He played in the World Series and will get paid $100MM+/- doing it.  I do not recall him ever having any issues with the law, drugs or alcohol.

He hasn't lived up to expectations and he has definitely regressed since joining the Braves. But is he a joke?

There are a number of people here that have son's grinding away in the minors that many here look up to.  I have enormous respect for them and their efforts and would never say that any of them are jokes but most won't have a fraction of the success that BJ/Melvin has had in the game.

If you had a son that had the same career as he had would you be busting his chops about it?  Think about it.

To answer the question bluntly, I probably would.  If my son had his talent (in any professional field) and wasn't living up to his potential I probably would be saying something to him. My kids know my wife and I won't blow smoke up their butts.

I saw BJ play in the minors (he played SS) multiple times and he is an extraordinary talent with many baseball tools.  There was no doubt he was the best player on the field. I met him and his parents after a game through a business associate.  Very nice & respectful young man.  But, I believe he is capable of so much more.

The name change is offseason baseball news which in the grand scheme of things doesn't mean much.  I really hope he puts it together, and soon.  He's proven he has the talent.
