Many long term members may be following the pro career of Andy Howdeshell, the son of the beloved and revered founder of this site, Bob. Please check the Tennessee forum and see the post entitled "Andy is OK..."

Good news, bad news, and good news:

Good: Andy hit 3 home runs in his last 3 games.

Very bad: His next at-bat after hitting the third one, he was hit in the face with a 92 mph fastball.

Very good: After lying on the ground for 15 minutes and a trip to the hospital for stitches, Andy was able to return to the field.

Thanks to HiwaseeVol for making us aware of this, and very best wishes to Andy for a speedy recovery!

This is the nighmare that every parent dreads, I'm very happy to hear that the young man will be alright.

There was a young ball player from the Boston area by the name of Conigliaro was hit in the head with a 90+mph fb and never was the same thereafter. He suffered blurred vision and had to retire form baseball before he had a chance to come to his stature as a ball player.

I hope Mr Howdyshell's son will be not suffer any ill affects from this.
Update:

Thanks to everyone for the kind words and support.

Now an update on "the kid." He sat out yesterdays game, and I was glad. Of course he said that he could have played!

Started tonight and went 2 for 3 (singles) add in a strike out and a hit by pitch! The radio announcer went out of his way to say that the pitch was an off speed pitch that "softly" plunked him in the back. Ha

Andy said later that it was a slider that hit him in the tricep. He wants to find the scouting report that says to pitch him hard inside!

Andy said that he had never been as nervous at the plate as he was in his first at bat tonight. Duh Anyway he said the first pitch was a fastball inner half so he swung hard and got the heck out of there. Turned out okay ... single between third and short.

Being 800+ miles away and listening on the internet, to something like this that happens to your own child is an experience that I would not wish on anyone!

I have to give praise to the management of the North Shore Spirit. The General manager and one of the trainers were on the phone to my wife while Andy was at the hospital. The team owner and the player agent both called later that night.

Professional baseball at any level is a business but these folks really came through for us!

Thanks for everything, everyone!
