While I was reading "Does this bother anyone else?", it crossed my mind that maybe Bonds, and others, wouldn't be so brave to crowd the plate without his armor.

What are the exact rules regarding the protection so many are now wearing? I thought I'd heard that it had to be doctor prescribed. Are there rules for other levels such as high school?

The "rule" is that the body armor has to be protecting an injury and doctor prescribed, as you thought. As if it's difficult to get a doctor to maintain there's a reason.

Considering how long it's been going on (and how he crowds the plate), it's hard to believe that Bonds' body armor is still legitimately prescribed.

Just another example of Bonds' Preferred Status.
