Im sitting here stuffed from all the food. All the presents have been opened. And everyone is taking a nap but me.

Feb to June - HS baseball season. Practice with the team , lift after practice or before. Plenty of running during before and after practice. Plenty of hitting during and after practice. And especially on the weekends.

July - August - Summer baseball time. Playing on the weekends on a good showcase team. Or playing on the weekends on whatever team is available hopefully a quality baseball experience. Working out Monday thru Friday. Core , agility , speed training , good baseball related weight lifting program , solid long toss program , plenty of hitting during the week.

Sept - Nov - Fall baseball time. Playing on the weekends on a good showcase team or whatever top quality baseball you can play. Continue your speed , core , agility training , long toss , weight lifting and plenty of hitting.

Dec - Jan - Shutting down the throwing. Alot of thera band work. Core , agility , speed training. Work real hard in the weight room. Tons of hitting. And alot of sprint work mixing in some distance now and then.

Do it all over again.

The players that have a game plan for success have success. The ones that dont do not. Talent will only take you so far. A strong work ethic and a love of the game which also includes a love at working at the things that make you a better player will take you a long way.

Lets all have a great year.

Hi Coach.
My son has been at it pretty much non-stop just like you said. He kept trying to get one of his teammates to lift, long toss, hit, core training to no avail. He would ask at least 2 or 3 of them to come with him to the field, to the gym, wherever. They just don't have the same goals as he does. He's already been told that when they come back from break he will be working with the jv/varsity group. The hard work pays off. Too bad he couldn't get one of his buddies to come along for the ride.
bb1 that is very common. But at least he is taking care of business. I always say if you want to be average there are plenty of examples around us everyday to follow. If you want to be special then you do more than everyone else around you. Too bad your son does not have any buddies that are willing to work as hard as him. Thats ok though. He will have some one day.
Merry Christmas Coach May: I have a couple of comments and some questions inserted. Son is HS Freshman (pitcher) and basketball player. Son is on NBA live amd I am on the lap top Wink

Shouldn't lifting be limited to a maintain mode just to keep some mass during the season? (particularly for pitchers) Heavy lifting seemed to effect my son's throwing. Seems like a time to be "baseball focused"

We are going to insert a 12 week pyramid lifting sequence from June - August with summer ball for strength gain. Also will work with speed and agility program.

Sept - Nov - Fall baseball time. Playing on the weekends on a good showcase team or whatever top quality baseball you can play. Continue your speed , core , agility training , long toss , weight lifting and plenty of hitting.

Will play fall ball. Reduce throwing to 2x per week and one fall ball game. May augment lifting, (thinking about a serious kettlebell program for a change up to the standard weight training)

HS basketball will start for running/agility/conditioning. (understatement as our program is a run and gun that really demands well conditioned athletes.

Dec - Jan - Shutting down the throwing. Alot of thera band work. Core , agility , speed training. Work real hard in the weight room. Tons of hitting. And alot of sprint work mixing in some distance now and then.

Late Oct/Nov/Dec throwing shut down. Start to throw again in mid Dec 2x per week and then go to 2-3x/week (if we can fit in between basketball season games)Since we are on the west coast I like to use the Jaeger pitchers camp as a way to get refocused on throwing.

Do it all over again.

Thanks!
Nice topic, Coach May...
Jan-April 30 - College baseball season. Practice with the team , lift on own with tons of extra BP.

May - scramble to get grades up after the intense "baseball before academics" mindset he has developed. More hitting on own in the cage to get ready for Legion.

June - end of July - Summer baseball time. Playing on legion team...in the infield after spending the college season in LF. Lifting on own. Working a while installing pools until business slowed. Speed training with local "Athletic Republic/Frappier" franchise. Solid program added speed and (surprisingly) power.

August - Hit the weights hard, continue hitting. Attending a couple of MLB open tryouts.

Sept - mid-Oct - Fall baseball time. Moved from LF to 2B to 3B...before coach settled in on the hot corner. Lifting on own at the Y.

Mid-Oct - Jan - Lifting with team AND on own. A lot more hitting and throwing starting in early December. Started speed training again in mid-Nov which will carry him to mid Jan and...

...doing it all over again.
It's amazing what the kids that love the sport and want to at least play in college go through. When we were kids it was baseball during baseball season, then football, then basketball and back to baseball. I think my sons only real break came at the end of July early August for about a month between, summer and fall ball. It was good though because he didn't throw for about 6 weeks and then in fall ball he pitched just a little. The coach was trying to get everyone some work which was just fine. He also understands that his goals and his buddies goals are different. Just makes it harder when they're not playing at the same level anymore.
Last year he did not workout during the season I think this year he intends to workout 2x a week whenever possible to try and not lose what he gained in the so called off season.
Have a good x-mas everyone, and a good new year too.I really appreciate all the advice Ive gotten on this site. Its been a pretty rough year for me,so Im ready for it to end

January-Feb: Offseason Training.Weights,longtoss,
March: I dislocated my thumb, only to break it 4 weeks later catching.

April: Lost my dog of over 10 years. One week later I was involved in a near fatal car accident(no,it wasnt my fault, and nobody including myself was seriously hurt)

May: Returned in mid may to baseball, played the remaining two weeks. We lost in our regional to two very good teams.Finished my sophomore year.

June-August:Summer ball, worked very hard in the weight room, hung out with friends, and also worked at my job(which I work at year round)

September: Injured in practice, and to this moment I still have two stress fractures on the l-3 column of my spine

October-Nov:School,work, inactivity from baseball. My sister was also sick and had to get a blood transfusion, and that didnt bode well with me.She is my elder by 2 years, and we are close

December: School,ACT,and was cleared to do very light weight room activities.Tomorrow I go back to the orthopedic to get re-xrayed,and if the bone has grown back,I am cleared,if not I still have 1 month to wait before resuming baseball activities.

Its been rough
It would be easiest to do my son's schedule and comment where I fit into it. It's also easier to go on a school year than a chronological year.

Late Augurst into November: high school s****r
September and October: travel fall ball
October into November: practicing basketball on own
November to February: high school basketball
November into January: weight and agility training for baseball
December into March: travel basketball
January: start hitting and fielding once or twice a week
February: start throwing
March through May: high school baseball
May: travel practice starts
June into August: travel baseball, basketball camps, goalie (s****r) camps
Middle of August: Surfs up! Vacation time.

Oh yeah, September through June: high honors student, which is more important than all the rest.

I coach his travel baseball and basketball teams. I watch the other teams and drop him off at the camps. Somewhere in all this I manage to see his older sister play some college softball games. When I had two kids playing school and travel baseball and softball I went to 131 games one year. I did miss a few. I couldn't be in two places at the same time. Until college ball, there's almost always at least one parent at the games.

When some people hear this schedule and comment on our lives being one dimensional, I tell them we do plenty of other things. What we don't have time for is sitting around watching television.
