RJM,

After reading up on these players, the only one who wanted to play in NY was Jeter. I can't blame the Yankees/Cashman for how they handled that, I would have done the same. I thought it was strange that Cashman "welcomed Jeter back" at the press conference after Jeter signed his new contract. That was a insert foot into mouth moment.

Crawford was going to either LAA or Boston. NY wasn't mentioned as an option for him. Sox showed Crawford the love, and he selected them in a last minute whim.

For Lee it came down to TX and Philly. Yankees offered the most $, but Lee was not interested in NY. Possibly, Mrs Lee had something to say about those NYY fans? Again, what more can the Yankees do in this situation?

Now, that doesn't mean the boss (God rest his soul)wouldn't have fired him anyway. But I'm not sure what else Cashman could have done in these cases. Thoughts?

I have to agree with Fenway South. As a Yankees fan I was loving the idea of Lee in a Yankees uniform, but there isn't much more Cashman could have done.

That being said, he is going to struggle to find some players to add to the Yankees roster now. Hopefully Pettite comes back and the Yankees DO NOT go after Grienke. With his past problems of depression, I'm not sure the NY spotlight is the best place for him.

Why start now? He survived the Carl Pavano-Kevin Brown-Randy Johnson-Jeff Weaver era. However, if Sabathia's knee isn't 100% in Spring Training and A.J. Burnett doesn't get his ERA under 5.5 this year Cashman might not make it to next year's Yankee Christmas Party. Maybe he can send out a BOLO for El Duque.

Z ... Would you say there was something dynamic about The Boss that would have sold New York that Cashman lacks in his personality?

Without question The Boss had something dynamic over Cashman to woo a free agent of Cliff Lee's level. In the end, it's hard to figure out if George would've done enough to sway Lee but he would have had his handprints all over this one. Hal & Hank lack the dynamics that George had but they inherited his loot.

I'm sure scratching my head why Lee picked Philly over the Yankees. The only thing that I see an advantage for Philly is the starting pitching staff.

As for firing Cashman had Boss been in charge, nah, if that were the case, Cashman would've been fired years ago. Cashman has been with the Yankees for about 25 years. Don't see him going anywhere unless he really ticks off the Steinbrenner boys or something.

While the Yankees can still win a title without Lee, and have already beaten Lee to win a WS, the team who's probably most frustrated are the Mets. Not that the Mets were gonmna be more than a .500 team anyway but now with the Philly rotation, they got no shot whatsoever.

My house is twenty miles outside the city. It's thirty miles from the stadium. It's where suburban meets rural. It's a combination of horse ranches and housing developments that used to be ranches. A couple of Phillies live here. Many of the Philadelphia athletes chose to live in New Jersey since there are nice places to live closer to the sports complex.

I've lived outside New York. We lived in the country in New Jersey forty miles outside the city. There are places in New Jersey that are countryish and closer. It is far more expensive to live in metro NYC.
