Freshman pitchers Chris Briere and Garrett Lythgoe, two Central Region alumni, both sparkled in their debuts for Longwood in a doubleheader against LeMoyne today.

In the opener, Briere (James River) allowed 1 unearned run in a five-inning start, allowing only 4 singles and 2 walks, while getting 3 K's and 2 DP balls. Unfortunately Briere was deprived of the win when Longwood's fielding and bullpen gave up 5 runs in the 8th and 9th innings to lose, 6-5.

In game 2, Lythgoe suffered 2 unearned runs in the third, but held on to shut out LeMoyne the rest of the way to go 7 innings for the 3-2 win. Lythgoe allowed 7 hits, walked none, and struck out 3.

Lythgoe looked pretty good again this weekend for Longwood. While not dominant, he was solid for 6.1 innings. It looked for a while like he was pitching just well enough to take a tough loss, as Longwood seemed to leave runners in scoring position several times. Although Lythgoe didn't pick up the win, he kept his team in the game long enough for a 6-run seventh inning to put one in the win column for Longwood.

Also, in more good news for a former Central Region standout, Justin Bristow had another good performance for ECU as he moved to 2-0.
Briere had a stumble in a relief appearance at UR, but righted the ship with 7 innings, 0 ER, at Norfolk State last week.

As for Bristow, that's really great news. I understand that he has taken the pitching fork in the road and will focus on that. I'm hoping that he can regain his past form and lay a foundation for the pro career he seemed destined for just a few years ago.
I've been following the Longwood vs. George Mason game (or the box score and play-by-play) online while I "work", checking occasionally to see how the action was going. Briere got the call again and was just taken out after 7.2 innings, giving up 8 hits and 3 runs (all earned). He walked 2 and struck out 6, and exits with Longwood trailing 3-2.

UPDATE: This one is over, as Briere will take the tough loss with the Lancers falling 3-2.
